It was a cold winter day.
Yujin just got off from her work as the head designer of the company. She loved the season of winter, so walking out of the building, she inhaled the chilly breeze that just passed by her.
The cold smog left her lips as she smiled at the view outside and headed toward her car. While walking to the parking lot, her eyes fell on a seemingly couple that brushed past her. A nostalgic look settled on her face and she stood there, watching the couple sharing their hot chocolates.
Yujin could feel her heart aching at the familiar warmth that used to hold her.
Shaking her head, she looked down at the road and kicked the small pebble that was in front of her.
"It's been three years, huh?" she mumbled to herself and took in a deep, shuddery breath before turning around toward the parking lot.
Hearing the soft crunches beneath her shoes, Yujin pocketed her hands in her brown overcoat, fisting them to keep them warm. She got to her car and sat inside, keeping her purse in the passenger's seat.
Fastening her seatbelt, she revved up the engine and backed up her car. A sudden fear took over her as she looked behind to see if the path was clear or not.
Yujin was not good at backing up her car. A few years ago when she accidentally accelerated a tad bit fast, it crashed into someone else's car. Sure to say, the owner was very much angry about what had happened.
But, a certain someone helped her to get over the fear. She was not scared of hitting anyone anymore. However, when the tragedy struck and Yujin was left alone, she had some close calls.
Finally, chanting God's name to help her, Yujin got out of the lot and made her way towards the straightforward road. She sighed as the anxiety dissipated and the past hit her.
Yujin was thinking about it again.
Never in a day in these three years had happened that Yujin hadn't relived her fond memories in her head.
Holding on to the steering wheel a little tighter, Yujin heavily sighed and tried to find a distraction from all of that. She looked outside her side window and saw her favorite coffee shop that she had come to find out while working nearby.
A smile graced her lips and she tilted her wheel to the way of the coffee shop.
Parking the car in front of the shop, her giddy feet stepped out of the car and walked up to the shop's front door.
But, destiny had destined her for something else on that day. As she lifted her head with a smile, it dropped in an instant and her brows furrowed with confounded emotions.
"Y/N?"
The name she had thought about almost every day was now finally on her lips.
Yujin watched in front of her eyes how Y/N was hugging another woman who was slightly taller than her. She saw how Y/N had that blissful expression on her face as she pulled apart and held the girl's hand in hers.
In conclusion, Y/N seemed jubilant.
Yujin's heart dropped in her stomach and she could feel herself on the brink of breaking down. She saw Y/N turning in her direction and walking ahead as she talked to the girl beside her. And when Y/N was just a few feet away, she turned her head forward and halted all of sudden.
A horrified expression masked Y/N's happy ones and her jaw slacked.
"Y-Yujin?" Y/N's voice had a note of disbelief in them, further proving Yujin's point.
The point that she had moved on. A little too early.
Instantly turning around, Yujin got in her car as she could hear Y/N's constant calling.
"Yujin! Yujin, stop!"
However, it was all too much for her to stay and listen to the happy telltale of how her ex got a new girlfriend. Without minding her seatbelt, Yujin took a U-turn and ran away from the place.
She steered through the cars in the traffic as her feelings took a toll on her. She didn't know where she was headed, but her unconscious brain drove her to the place where she would go whenever she felt lonely or dispirited.
The bridge.
That place had a serene vibe to it. A stream going below the bridge, Yujin would stare at the running waters and would find herself calm and level-headed.
After what seemed like an eternity to her, she reached her destination. Rushing out of her car, she ran to the bridge and staggered against the railing. A choking sob left her lips as she closed her eyes and felt the tears spilling out of her eyes.
"Why? Why Y/N?" she said as she tried to hit the railing with her hands.
The anger, the frustration, the sadness, the hurt, the worry, Yujin felt all of that weighing on her chest. Her head hung down as tears fell on the railing. She bit her lower lip to stop it from trembling.
"Found you."
The familiar voice went in through her ears and to her brain, giving her the sense to turn around and look for herself. And she was right.
Y/N was there.
"I knew you would be here, "Y/N said in between her heavy breathing. She looked like she had just run a lap on the soccer field.
Advancing toward Yujin, Y/N wiped her sweaty palms on her pants and composed herself for what was about to happen.
Wiping her tears with the back of her hand, Yujin jerked her head down, avoiding eye contact with Y/N.
Stopping just a foot away from her, Y/N cleared her throat as she rummaged through her thoughts to find the right words to fill in the awkward silence.
"H-How are you?" Y/N asked, thinking that it was the safest way to start a conversation.
Yujin, on the other hand, scoffed lightly and said, "Cut to the chase already."
"What do you mean by that?" Y/N asked, confused as to what was all the sharp tone about.
"Don't act so naive, Y/N. We both know why you are here, "Yujin replied, this time looking into the eyes of Y/N.
Y/N felt her heart cracking a little as she saw Yujin's teary, red eyes. Her nose was kind of red with the cold outside.
"I genuinely don't know what you are talking about, Yujin, "Y/N said, trying to convey her cluelessness.
Yujin lightly snickered and sharply glared at her, saying, "You're here to tell me about your new girlfriend, right? Want me to know how bad of a girlfriend I was to you. Couldn't even keep a relationship going. Want to tell me how she took care of you when I couldn't. Isn't it?"
Y/N was inarticulate. All she could do was stare at Yujin as to what she even spoke in those last few seconds.
Watching Y/N's silence, the only thing Yujin could think of was to walk away, as far as she could. However, as she tried to work out her plan, it all came down when Y/N held her arm and stopped her from moving further.
"You're not going anywhere until we clear this up, "Y/N said and all Yujin could do was nod.

Yujin didn't remember how these last fifteen minutes happened. She couldn't believe what she was seeing in front of her eyes.
Y/N was sitting on her couch with a cup of coffee in her hand.
She didn't imagine it all to happen like this, but she wasn't complaining. Somehow, seeing Y/N after three years, Yujin couldn't help but feel the sense of security that she always felt around Y/N before.
Sitting beside her and leaving a friendly gap, Yujin sipped on her warm coffee and felt the liquid making her goosebumps stand up under her clothes.
Maybe it was Y/N's effect too? She shrugged off the thought to focus on the bigger problem in her hand.
It was the tipping point for them. It could go either favorable or awry.
"How are you?" Y/N asked, her voice soft.
Yujin swirled her coffee in the mug and replied, "Living. You?"
"You could say the same for me, "Y/N said.
Silence again took over them as they sat there, letting it all sink in. In the meantime, Y/N finished up her coffee to the last drop and kept the mug on the table in front.
"Your coffee is still the best to me, "she said, a small smile playing on her lips.
Yujin trailed her eyes to look at Y/N's side face and averted them before she looked back again. She heard a heavy exhale of air before the revelation that made her feel utterly guilty and sorry.
"She was my cousin from Boston. Not my new girlfriend."
"I'm sorry, "Yujin's instant reply came through.
"No, no. It's okay for you to speculate... People misunderstand and it's fine, "Y/N assured.
"But, I shouldn't have. I know you, Y/N. I'm sorry, "Yujin said, suddenly feeling uneasy about the words she said before to her.
"Look at me, "Y/N said and Yujin hesitantly gazed up. "Stop feeling sorry for something you didn't do on purpose. It's okay to misunderstand, but not clearing it up is wrong."
Yujin nodded subtly and bit her lower lip.
"And you were not a bad girlfriend to me. You were you. You were perfect in your ways, Yujin, "Y/N said, plucking on the strings of Yujin's heart which hadn't been touched in so long.
"B-But, I broke up with you... Didn't I?" Yujin asked, subsiding the raging emotions and letting the reality hit her instead.
Y/N scooted a little closer as she took her hands in between hers, squeezing them. "Because you fell out of love and it's okay! People change and it's natural, Yujin. We broke up on a good note, didn't we?"
Yujin reminisced about their last day together. It was just a simple getaway to the park, talking like normal people before parting away for good. Yujin thought that maybe she would find someone whom she would love with all her heart, but it didn't happen.
Gazing at Y/N's face, Yujin realized that it had always been her. She never fell out of love. She was so in love that it became normal for her to be with Y/N. And somehow, that weirded her out, thinking that weren't relationships supposed to give you butterflies in your stomach all the time.
Slinging her arms around her neck, Yujin pulled Y/N in a tight hug that surprised the said girl.
"Yujin? You okay?"
"No, I'm not. I haven't been since we broke up, Y/N. Not a day has passed when I don't think about you. I was so immature to leave you for a silly reason. I'm sorry, "Yujin said, crying as she tightened her grip around Y/N.
Not wanting her to go.
She felt Y/N's arm curling around her and squeezing her frame as she heard, "Let's take it step-by-step."
Yujin's breath hitched and she pulled apart, looking bewildered. "W-What?"
Y/N chuckled and tucked a hair strand behind her ear, cupping her cheeks. She replied, "In case you ever foolishly forget; I'm never not thinking of you."
"D-Does that mean-"
"Yes, Yujin. I will gladly do it all over again with you, "Y/N answered with a bashful smile.
After these heart-wrenching years apart, Yujin felt everything falling together in one place. She let out a happy tear as it was wiped by Y/N and she whispered.
"Step-by-step."
