It was our usual Saturday night, a dinner with friends.
I turned the car engine off and stepped out. After making sure it was locked, I walked up to the front porch of my house and then through the front door.
"Hey, love!"
My wife, Lisa, greeted me as soon as I entered. She wrapped her arms around my neck and gave me a peck on my lips. She smiled brightly, looking at me with affection in her eyes.
I smiled in return and said, "Hey, Lisa. Is everyone here already?"
Lisa hugged me close as she snuggled her head in the crook of my neck and said, "Yeah, almost. Rosie is on her way, though. She said she had a meeting and stuff."
My heart skipped a beat at the mention of her name, enough to make me feel excited. The thought of seeing her after a long and tiring day was exhilarating. However, a sudden kiss from Lisa brought me out of my trance. I looked at her blankly before she spoke.
"Is everything okay, my love? You look tired."
I gently pulled away, not wanting to appear rude, even though I felt the guilt seeping in. I shook my head and answered, "Yeah, just a little. I'll wash up. I'll meet you in the dinner hall in thirty."
With that said, I brushed past her and up the stairs to my room. I threw my bag and coat on the bed as I went straight into the bathroom to take a much-needed shower.
After washing up and drying my hair, I got changed into a comfy high-neck sweater and pants.
I looked at my reflection in the mirror and saw the exhaustion of the day reflected in my eyes. Emotions were not easy to hide in one's eyes. I lightly slapped my cheeks, forcing a smile, before squaring my shoulders and heading downstairs to the living room.
"Hey, Miss Manager. How are you doin'?" Jennie, my soulmate-- literally, because we might have known each other for as long as I could remember.
I smiled as Jennie pulled me in a hug and I said, "Hey yourself, Jen. We just saw each other in the office."
Jennie chuckled as she pulled away, and I saw Jisoo behind her. Jisoo, our mutual colleague and also Jennie's girlfriend, whom we have accepted as one of us now, came forward to hug me.
"Hey, Y/N, "She said in her low timbre.
I gave her a gentle squeeze and replied, "Hey, Jisoo. How have you been? How's your company coming along?"
Jisoo was an aspiring entrepreneur of a new start-up business and, dare I say, she looked every part of a successful future CEO.
Jennie wrapped her arm around Jisoo's waist and said, "It's coming along well. I've been tagging along with her almost every day after work."
Jisoo gave her a warm smile and kissed her cheek, saying, "Yeah. Jennie's been a big help in all of this."
I smiled, feeling a tinge of jealousy at how simple their love was. How straightforward their love seemed.
Lisa stood next to me as she locked her arm with mine and said, "It's nice to see another couple in the house, but can someone help me in the kitchen?"
Jennie and Jisoo chuckled at Lisa's comment as I gave a subtle shake of my head and said, "I'll help. What do you need me to do?"
However, before Lisa could say a word, the front doorbell rang.
"Well, be a darling and see who's at the door, love. That'd be enough for me," Lisa said as she planted a kiss on my shoulder before returning to the kitchen.
I swiftly made my way to the door and opened it.
The first thing that hit me was the familiar fragrance of her woody perfume, and then my eyes met hers.
"Rosé."
I uttered her name in an overwhelmed whisper as I saw her smiling brightly as she looked at me. Her eyes lit up as her melodious voice said my name, "Y/N! I didn't know you'd open the door for me. What a surprise."
I felt the giddiness of being a teenager again and seeing my crush in school as I felt my heart racing in my chest.
"Uh, y-yeah, me too. A nice surprise, I hope, "I said, the slight stutter in my voice made her giggle as I blushed furiously at that.
"It is the best surprise I can ask for. If I could get this view every day, "Rosé said, looking at me with the same adoration that I have for her in my eyes.
I chuckled and said, "Like the view?"
Rosé leaned a bit close to whisper, "Very. Who wouldn't love a view so sexy?"
I laughed at her attempt to flirt-- it was working well though-- and said, "You and your words, Rosé, they're gonna be the death of me."
We both shared a laugh, but our moment was interrupted when Lisa came up behind me.
"Love? What's taking you so long-- Oh, it's Rosie!" Lisa smiled as I stepped back from Rosé, instinctively, and heard Lisa say, "What are you doing making our Rosie stand outside in the cold, love? Let her in."
I nodded and said, "Y-Yeah!"
"Come in, Rosé, "I said, looking at her as we shared a glance while she brushed past me.
I closed the door behind her and stayed there for a minute, trying to shake off the nerves that I just felt, and walked back in.
Rosé was greeting everyone while my eyes never left her as I decided to sit on the couch in the living room. I leaned my head back and saw Jennie walking towards me and sitting next to me.
As I and Jennie sat on the couch, my eyes swiftly moved toward Rosé who was at the far end of the table, laughing with Jisoo and Lisa. She looked different in my eyes, her presence had been always there in my life, but these few months had changed my perspective on her.
She was stunning. Everything about her was.
A sudden snap of fingers in front of my face broke me from my trance as I looked to the side to see Jennie with furrowed eyes.
"Hey, what is it? You were staring so hard at something. Is everything alright?" Jennie asked, her voice low.
My eyes went back and forth between Jennie's face and Rosé's. Somehow, Jennie immediately caught my gaze and scooched closer to me, her eyes trained on Rosé too as she asked, "Why... are you looking at Rosie with those eyes?"
My heart lurched in my chest at her sudden question. I gave her a wide-eyed look and asked, "W-What eyes? What do you mean, Jen?"
"I've known you for how many years? Fourteen? And we're colleagues on top of it, " Jennie asked, emphasizing her point as she rested her hand on mine and asked, "What is it, Y/N? You know you can tell me anything. This is me."
A thunder of anxiety filled my chest as I looked down at my hand where my wedding ring sat and I lifted my gaze and looked into Jennie's eyes. Something about her eyes made me calm and urged me to spill.
And so I did.
"I... I don't love Lisa anymore, "my voice tiny- maybe the tiniest of the voices I have uttered in my whole life.
For a moment, Jennie didn't say anything and leaned in, asking, "Come again?"
I sighed and said in a stable voice this time, but inaudible to other women, "I don't love Lisa anymore, Jen. I have fallen for someone else."
Jennie blinked for a few moments, stunned. Then she leaned forward with her ear first and asked, "Who... is it?"
Involuntarily, my eyes went to Rosé and Jennie caught my sight again and she gasped out loud.
"Y/N? Really? Her? The one who helped you with Lisa, you're in love with her? Oh my god, you better be joking. Is this like a soap opera or something?" Jennie exclaimed, finding my confession extremely absurd, "Y/N, you've loved Lisa, your wife, since you both were in college. And now you suddenly fell out of love? Are you even listening to yourself?"
I knew I wasn't being myself, but I couldn't help it. I had fallen out of love and fallen for someone else. After hearing it from Jennie's mouth, it felt absurd, but those words explained my feelings exactly.
People change and so did I.
Somehow, the bit of our commotion caught the ladies' attention as they turned to us and came towards us. Sensing their approach, I held Jennie's hand tightly, my eyes betraying the fear- the fear of being caught.
Lisa rested her hand on my shoulder and asked, "What happened love? Is everything alright? You both look like you've seen a ghost."
Jennie ran a hand through her hair and said, "It would've been better if it was a ghost. I... need some air. Excuse me."
With that, Jennie abruptly stood up and went out to the balcony. I saw Jisoo following her out as Lisa sat beside me.
My eyes looked down at her hands holding mine as she said, "Give her a moment. Jisoo will bring her back, don't worry."
I nodded at her words- failing to get comfort as I stared at the way to the balcony, hoping Jennie wouldn't spill the beans with Jisoo. Because if that happened, everything would be ruined.
A sudden warm hand on my right shoulder made me shiver as I looked to my side and saw Rosé standing beside me. Her eyes told me to calm down.
Somehow, it made me relax slightly as I gave her a small smile. I felt Lisa's head leaning on my shoulder as I looked up at Rosé with longing in my eyes. For just a moment, I wanted to hug Rosé and forget everything else in the world.
Shaking my head, I stood up from the couch and walked away to my room. Stopping just an inch away to say, "Lisa, I'll be in my room for a moment, don't wait up for me and have dinner with everyone."
"What about you? Should I come with you?" Lisa asked, her voice conveying her worries.
I shook my head and said, "I'll join soon, don't worry."
With that, I walked into my bedroom. Closing the door behind me as I sat on my bed, my head swimming with multiple thoughts at a time. I clutched my head in my hands as I sighed out loud, almost crying. Somehow, after telling Jennie, I realized inside me how fucked I was.
I looked up as a knock sounded at the door, and I saw Rosé stepping inside, closing the door behind her. She carefully sat beside me as I looked away from her.
I felt guilty for not giving her my all due to the restrictions in my life. I loved her, but my situation prevented me from doing so. And that thought made my heart hurt.
Suddenly, I felt Rosé's hand settling on my thigh as her head gently rested on my shoulder. The whiff of her expensive perfume brushing my nose as my nerves gradually calmed down and thoughts started to blur.
"I heard your talk with Jennie. Are you sure you both will be okay?" She asked, her voice soft and careful. As if, anything she'd say would be held against her.
I took her hand that was on my thigh and held it in mine, lacing my fingers through, and replied, "We'll be. Jennie and I go way back, she'll come around. She needs to protect me."
A small chuckle left my lips as Rosé lifted her head. I looked at her and she smiled warmly at me. Her eyes were sad and filled with guilt as if it was her fault.
Taking a deep breath, I said, "It's not you, Rosie. You didn't do anything wrong. I promise... I'll turn this right."
Rosé nodded and leaned forward for a hug. A hug I was grateful for. My arms instinctively wrapped around her protectively as I felt a determination to make things right. It was on me, my responsibility, to make the woman in my arms feel secure.
"I promise I'll give you your rightful place. Soon, "I said, pressing a kiss on the top of her head.
