Let's just say I never seen as creepy of a hospital as the one I was looking up at.
The once white walls were pealing off in strips of yellow that hung off, revealing concrete and metal underneath it, many of the windows dusted over but a few cracked, one broken through.
I couldn't see inside from here but death radiated from it, even before the apocalypse hospitals almost felt like a omen of death, no one went in there unless something was wrong with them and here stood a dilapidated one, the maws of it wide open and the gullet darker then night.
The silence, I'll never get used to it, this ominous silence. It felt so oppressive and monstrous while it was also sickly sweet, when it is silent it is safe but when you hear something to shatter this silence....
"There." Adar broke the silence, I don't exactly know how but with two wrenches he broke the padlock on the gate and pushed the sliding entrance out, it was not much, too frozen but we could fit in with a shove.
Even in its last days humanity was bastards, locking people that needed help in here to die, hands can't fit through the fencing and the padlock was outside..... Or was is an act of mercy? Trying to save people outside of the spreading disease? But sacrificing those inside for nothing? Questions like this will forever remain unanswered.
I held the baseball bat Jasmine had gave me tightly as I slipped between the gate, a really tight squeeze, it was one with barbed wire looped around it tightly, I think I've seen her carry this around herself, actually complaining about it and Andie constantly promising that she'll fix another one for her in the future.
I looked over my shoulder, Adar struggling to fit through, it was chilling to see.
He held the fire axe, we each had a gun tho only one clip for each....
I walked ahead.
The snowed over ground was bumpy, I kicked off the snow of one to reveal a checkered shirt.
I sighed, looking around, many other dead were frozen statues, I have no idea how they can thaw out and function still but I am over asking these sorts of never to be answered questions about the dead..... And to say once I liked zombie movies, I feel sick to think about that now.
I fished a forehead flashlight from the bag, once again it was something Jasmine pulled out of somewhere, I put it on and turned it on.
Stepping inside was like the setting of a horror video game but honestly our whole lives were just that.
The empty wheelchair caught my eyes first, laying on its side, discarded by a previous resident, what was once blood but now was moss leading away from it, chairs over turned, things broken.
"Damn." I flinched a little at his voice.
"And to think we had seen enough.... We'll never get used to this world." I muttered, even with the light, the darkness seemed suffocating.
"You can say that again." Adar walked passed and too what was one the receptions desk, rounding it.
Another thing I sadly noticed was, yes it is cold in here but not building is ever as cold as the outside if something is in it to keep it a bit warmer then the outside, usually a space heater but also things that breath, move and live... Maybe not the live part but there was something, the fog clouds breathed out were lesser and that was scary.... Just how many of these things are in here to make this happen?
"Adar." I whispered. "Be quiet, we don't know how many we'll disturb." I said as he grabbed two boxes of unopened face masks and put them in his bag, that reminded me of pulling my own from my pocket and putting it on, hospitals are dangerous plus lets not get infected by blood of husks I am sure we'll meet, I also put on my sunglasses tho it dimmed my vision, at least my eyes were safe.
"Right." He put on those goofy fake glasses and a mask too, it will work.
He rejoined me and held a map of the hospital up, plasticized so it held up but I saw many gnawed on papers, probably moths, I guess that's why Andie asked to have any 'still good' books brought back for safe keeping.... That Cody... I hope he doesn't burn down that book store he is roomed in.
There was a room labeled at the 'Meds HQ' so I think it is not an official map but someone that worked here long ago that did this because yeah, doesn't seem professional.
"Let's go." I whispered, grabbing the map and walking in front since he was tying the broken flashlight on, not elastic enough to be tied around his head but he tied it around his neck.
It was even more quiet then the outside, eerie quiet.
I was being paranoid, feeling hundreds of eyes on us.
But it was not the quite that was freaking me out, it was the noise.
It was a metal door to get in with a small glass window too small to fit anyone through and each time Adar brought down the axe on the handle, the horrible noise it made echoed.
We are deep in the bowels of this building, I can't feel the cold, I am quite terrified.
I would flinch each time he hit the door until finally the door popped open, lock and handle caved in a pushed away from the door frame.
"Thank gods." I sighed, pushing it open, it opened inwards. "We'll as much as we can and leave." I said, feeling unsettled as I stepped in.
It was a big hospital so what did I think? This was a large room.
And so we started going around, reading diagonally and throwing it in our bags, for the moment I mostly took packs of pills and not really those in glass containers..... Well.... Fine a few of the glasses.
I snapped my head up, hearing a sound.
Without thinking I ran too the door.
I froze a meter away from it, seeing something slide across my vision before slamming the door as closed as it could be with the broken caved in lock when the thing caught itself and jumped at it, loudly thumping against it.
I laid my weight on the door as the thing rammed it again.
Adar picked up my discarded bag and hurried to my side tho that didn't hold much of my attention.
What did, was the large sinewy pink appendage, covered in tumor like growths, that slide through the hole left by the caved in lock, the end splitting int more little tentacle.
It felt around and, stupid me, didn't react until it touched me and ensnared my arm in less then a second, one second I was free and next not.
The thing slammed my arm against the door and was trying to pull it through the tiny hole with all its strength.
"Shit!" I put a leg on the door and tried pulling back but I only got about an inch it gave, it was much stronger then me.
Lucky me, Adar to the rescue, slicing it with the axe as he leaned his weight on the door.
I stumbled and fell, actually screaming at the thing didn't let go, trying to slither up my arm now that it was not tied to its host.
I grabbed the end and moved so I could step on it and forcefully unraveled it only for it to latch on my foot, I just stomped the shit out of it until it finally stopped moving.
"You alright?" Adar asked, talking normally now, to be heard over the banging.
"Yeah, not bitten." I said, feeling my arm and tapping my foot.
I took a deep breath as another impact came.
How will we get out of this now?
