"And yeah so, chickens." I bored-ly explained to the two new adults as they looked as surprised as Adar and Lucy had when they learnt that I had chickens.
"By gods." Julie muttered, holding the bars of the gate.
"Well no eggs yet but it has been a stressful period of time even if it doesn't look like it." I said, winter always has its stresses... They did lay when I met Ed so yeah, food is also less varied and that will change soon too.
Julie had just written everything I showed them on her given map while Linda just folded it in her pocket.
"Anyhow.... Any jobs or skills from the old world?" I asked, shepherding them back to the protected area.
"I wouldn't say any skills unless juggling counts as one." Julie grumbled. "And I was a store clerk."
"Don't underestimate yourself, I could do a little parkour, it was to annoy my father and it ended up saving my life. Juggling hmm.... I'd say that means you are dexterous and have a good aim, if we ever find grenades we'll give them to you."
"Thanks, you don't need to reassure me."
"I was a student in biology before this, all I do today is learnt and yet I am alive, you are alive, being a clerk isn't the worst. Anyhow Linda, you?"
"An office worker."
So she was the manager probably, a Karen to out Karen them all.... Tho I should never tell her that since I am sure that comment will turn her into one.
"As long as you do your weight in work, stay for now but follow the rules to the letter."
"Ay ay Captain." Julie joked with a salute. "But what's the School?"
"That brick walled building I live in, I've had it for a long time, unless I let you in, no matter who you are, you will be shot."
"Jeez.... Got it."
"Good." Across the bridge, I finally decided to cut my hair, I will finally need to decide myself to get these cars pushed off, all we need is to push them back, the wheels spin, I am sure us 6 grown ups can do it. "You have your usual 'jobs', we'll need to bust the way to the roof of the place you are staying at to set up buckets in bulk, there is a lot of rain here and that's free water, I wouldn't trust the river's cleanness unless it is boiled."
"Is that why this place is now called Rain Point?"
"Yeah." I nodded stopping in the little clearing of building we had. "There is also other sorts of jobs I'd say. The one of gathering resources once in a while, as long as we know what they are, you can stockpile them in your home or killing and burning husks, thinking of how to make our lives better and all that. There are also more specified ones. Lucy took over taking care of the chicken and Adar is making a garden in the park I called 'tall park' on the maps, Cody on the other hand took too be a sort of guard. As long as you do something, good."
"There are the children... Maybe look after them? If we are staying that is." Has she not gotten the message that we wouldn't be bothered if they stayed? Whatever.
"Sure, you didn't meet her yet but there is Jasmine that will come back, a teen, I want to make sure she and other kids will learn basic knowledge and such so if either of you does that, good."
"Well you should." Julie told Linda who looked a bit offended. "Hey, you've been with them longer then I have, know them more and you are older, you have experience."
"I also have school books since my home was a school, it's not just some odd name I gave it." Tho it reminded me of the husks I drew on the black boards to keep their info in mind, I should warn them about the different types. "Anyhow, kill corpses, burn corpses, we don't want bad surprises and trust me, bad surprises would happen." I'll warn them a bit later, I need to find my notebook so I can show them the sketches how these weird once in a blue moon fuckers look like.
"Do you accept other guards? Like I can't think of anything else to do." Julie brought up.
I shrugged, the more people the more guards will be needed as people make noise being alive, the sniffers will maybe smell us and if, this ever actually becomes a bigger group, it will need some sort of laws.
Laws, I'll need to talk with the others, maybe everyone, about rules outside of the ones I impose to follow by since even if it all works for now it is only because they respect my words.... One of these days, what if another group wanna come in and clashes? Maybe having these new laws sketched out could make them agree to peacefully talk? I am thinking too much, way too much
"I mean sure, we'll show you to the sports shop or to the museum like Cody, to get yourself some protective layers." I offhandedly said. "I advise you to stockpile food, water and clothes to start off with and to not leave this protected center without anyone, when you are proven safe, you'll get your weapons back. Meanwhile I'll ask one of the others to go check out that wreck of a car and get whatever stuff you had in it."
They nodded.
I know this could be boring, bossed around, but it is important to get your roles down fast, good for you and us too.
More people to look after and be scared of loosing.
Good job Andie, you've done it this time...
