"Oh a kitty!"
I looked up, putting out the cinders in the fire pit.
"That's Whiskers." I told the kids, Dawn having called out.
I walked to the wall and held out my arm, Whiskers jumping in them after a moment and I crouched down so she could pet him.
"I miss kitties." She said, even Nicolas scratched Whiskers behind the ears, making the little dude purr.
"I do too." I admitted. "I miss a lot of things." I don't know how old she was but she can't remember much about the old world and it makes me sad, so much will be lost to this hell. "I also have two fish tho I can't show them to you."
I was looking after the children today while Linda and Julie had been given a little map and sent with Adar and Lucy to get familiar with Rain Point, Cody was somewhere around here too but I didn't care enough to truly wonder about it.
"I had a dog when this started, a little one." Nicolas sadly said. "They took her from me, saying she was a waste of resources."
"I am sorry." I put Whiskers down and he loved himself against the kids, I am more then sure you are missing Jasmine too, she was the one to always pet you. "Here you don't need to worry. Being careful is a must tho."
I was not keen on this thought but I might skip my own rules and hand their weapons back right away, taking them away limits what damage they can do but still, also limits their usefulness.
I looked at the hockey stick Nicolas still caries around as his weapon and I fear it has been of use already, duct tape and a broken tip must mean something.
"So how old are you guys?" I sat on one of the plastic law chairs, leaning forwards.
"I'm 13." I had been correct, younger then Jasmine. "And Dawn's 8."
I felt really sorry for them.
"I'm..." I actually needed to think, age not mattering in such a world that is ours. "23.... 24 in a few months..." I sighed.... I had been 18 when this started... 18... Nicolas was was 8 and Dawn was 3... How cruel.
They remind me so much of Jack and David.... They would have been around Nicolas' age nowadays... I wish that they would be...
I shook my time, I can't think about this now, not in front of them.
"We also have chickens but you can't meet them yet, later when you are this tall." I gave a random height with my hand as the moment Dawn heard of other animals she lit up.
"Awe, poop."
"Now now, we don't say bad things." Cody who finally reappeared said tho I had something similar in mind.
Soon enough, they got disinterested from me and I watched them playing with the half dead soccer ball I had brought up, I should really also bring a pump or something, my bike tires are also being soft... Tho the fact the ball lacked much of a bounce didn't bother the kids.
I sighed... I wish I could given them a life, not just survive but what am I asking for in this world? I was never not cruel.
It takes and takes however it wants and when it wants.
And so I'll be cruel.
I'll do what needs to be done to protect my people.
I'll stop feeling guilty and embrace the monster I need to be.
This is the only way.
