I walked casually, I haven't even gone back for protection, I just pulled the mask on and the goggles down and went.
"What a mess." I breathed out, talking for the first time in a while, the shots coming from near to the school building where I first discovered this mess was highly infectious, right from the library from between it and the hospital.
I spun the bat and slammed it in the back of the few husks that gathered but I knew the screams and gunshots would draw more in soon.
It was easy to dispatch them and knocked on the door they were trying to bust through.
"Anyone?! Husks are dead!" I yelled, voice a bit hoarse from lack of use and the door opened to a man looking at me.
He looked around and saw that I was right.
"Thank yo--" Cut off by a scream.
I looked passed him.
"Seriously you couldn't use protection?!" I barked, she still survived.... I saw a pregnant woman in there, talking as if I knew them for years. "How stupid are yo--" I cut myself off.
I raised the bat as he heavily coughed.
"NO!" The woman yelled as I slammed the bat on the man's head. "STOP!!" I put my foot on his chest to keep him from standing and almost ripped his jacket open and away from the darker patch on it.
"I knew it!" I see the bleeding bite. "Sorry but a bite infects, you will soon die." I said lifting my bat again, intending to give him more then a concussion.
"Please stop!" The woman tried to grab me but I backed off.
"You shouldn't touch him or I, every liquid from blood to saliva coming from a husk is 100% contagious, if you want to live along with your soon to be child back off." I said coldly.
She looked scared and backed up, choosing to believe me.... Or was it fear? I don't care....
"I've seen this." I looked at the man I shoved back down with my foot. "First the fever, then the cough, soon the runny nose and sensitive skin, and then comes the feelings like your bones are shards of glass, you either can die now or risk everyone's life and be consumed by pain."
He looked at me, I guess I sounded like I knew all about these things which is why both believed me so fast as he started crying... I wish I could still cry... It felt like they dried long ago....
"Let me-ouch!" He reached towards the woman but I moved my foot and stepped on his wrist.
"No, you can't risk it, I am sorry but the world it cruel, the air you are breathing out is enough to endanger her life.... I can't offer much but I can promise that I'll try what I can too help." At least so he has peace before he dies...
"I-I." He said through tears.
"How do you want to go?" I asked, holding the bat. "Hurry up! Babies have barely any immune system and you two were stupid enough to make one, it could die in the hour if it came in contact with the virus and who knows what horrific mutation we might have? I am not sure I can even help her!"
Silence.
The same heavy silence since the start of humanity's downfall.
And in a split second he whispered an 'I love you' before putting a gun to his head and pulling the trigger.
"You trust too much, what if I had lied?" I asked the in pain woman. "Come, can you walk? I still can't touch you but I have a safe space, I can help if we get there."
"I... Don't know if I can."
"Look lady there are husks that heard you and the guns, if we don't leave now we'll be stuck here for who knows how long."
This is a mess!
"Move!" I pushed her in an alley and a type D ran past us.
I waited for it too come back and bat right to the neck, the head still biting at me but the body didn't move.
I turned back to her.
"Dammit." I walked over. "Get up woman!" Each time I touched her I took great care of always grabbing a part of her clothes that she can't touch easily like the back of her coat, I tried to pull her by the back of it, we need to get out of this dead end, I need to write these on my map or we can get stuck, but she didn't move.
I was getting quite nervous, we are in a dead end, birth imminent and I am what? A student that barely knows biology and DIY-ed her whole survival, I can't help nor even get that near to her, even just holding my hand might help-fuck.
"We need to move lady if you don't want to die!"
"I-I can't it's there."
"FUCK YOU YEAH?!" I yelled in desperation, she was crying since her man died but it seemed to get worst at my scream. "Sorry." I grumbled, backing up and hitting at a husk.
My bat was grabbed.
"What are you thinking of swinging at me?!"
"I'd say I am happy to see you but...." I stopped myself. "How was I so right that you'd survive this?"
"You think this can kill your father? Don't make me laugh I was in the military for a while!"
"Yeah whatever, do you have gloves?" I didn't take time to question how he found me even if he made his way to this town, that can wait. "I need your help."
