I woke up to constant banging.
It reminded me about what happened.
I sat up, having cried myself to sleep on the balcony.
I looked down from it and saw no corpses in the street.
I took a deep breath as my stomach growled.
I silently ate my yogurt, all three with even the milk mixed into it I was so hungry but it didn't fill me up completely.
I even ate the butter despite how awful it tasted for me, without anything to go with it but even that still wasn't enough.
I looked towards the banging on the door.
"They come to sound." I was really worried this corpse might bring others to my door.
I looked around, I need a weapon, everyone needs a weapon, pepper spray doesn't work it seems.
I looked through the kitchen drawer, grabbing the solid metal ladle, it had some good heft to it and the best choice since I didn't have one of those half a forearm length knives, I have the puny little eating knives.... I bought a lot of take-out, I couldn't afford more.
I squeezed the handle in my hand as I reached for the key still in the lock and turned it.
He didn't press the handle down so I needed to open it.
I backed up as I swung, making me miss the men twice before I hit the wall and then hit him, since I couldn't back up anymore.
I screamed in fear and hit him on the head while he was down, twice.
I trembled but he didn't stand, my eyes shifting to the blood on the ladle.
I grabbed my backpack and hurried to the balcony, seeing the corpses amass and pushing in the entrance door having heard me scream, fuck!
I grabbed my bag in a hurry with the notebook I threw in it and my phone with its charger.
I then went back to the balcony and climbed over the railing and down it.
I put my feet on the lower railing and hopped into my lower neighbors balcony, pushing myself in the furthest corner of it and sitting down with knees to my chest and ladle at the ready to swing.
I hugged my knees as I waited, hearing the shambling groaning groups nearing.
I flinched when I saw one fall over the railing, hitting this one with an arm and then heard it go splat on the ground.
I didn't dare to breathe, what if they hear me?
But I knew I needed to go.
I want to live.
I tried silently opening the window-door of this apartment and it only did a small click , not enough to get the others to hear, I stepped in, ready to swing.
But there was no one, the front-door was open so I closed it.
I silently made my way down the stairs and outside, keeping in mind of staying under the balcony so I wasn't seen, I-I think they can't smell or really little since they didn't follow me out.
I looked at the bloody mess left by corpse that went splat and the boy from earlier and the bat left behind.
I reached out for it and grabbed it as I stuck the ladle in between my belt and pants, holding the bat firmly.
I walked down the street that was now so empty of life, going slowly, not risking anything.
I heard nearing moaning so I dropped my backpack and rolled under a car before pulling it with me.
I held my breath as the corpses were close, they walked around the car, if one trips it is over for me.... But none did.
I climbed out when they were far enough to not hear me and I took up my walk.
I jogged up to the restaurant and the front door was open.
I went inside and pushed one of their tables against it.
I walked behind the counter and into the kitchen, the electricity still working so the sliding glass door to it opened. I hurried to the back door and pushed one of the bins I saw against it.
I went out of the kitchen, crouching behind the serving counter as there was a window bay and I didn't know if they could see.
I opened one of those drawer fridges and there were bottles in it, from water to coca cola to wine.
I went through each very slowly but still making noise.
I heard them, I always heard before I saw.
I swung the bat seeing the sliding door opened, catching the corpse in the throat with the bat.
I swung more in fear then in determination, not wanting to die.
It was like I blacked out or closed my eyes.... One of the two.... As I had three corpses dressed as cooks dead again at my feet.
I backed up against the counter, panting as I sat down and pulled out a beer bottle, I got on my knees to grab a corkscrew and a bottle opener hybrid tool, sitting back on my ass and popping the bottle cap off and taking a swig of it.
"I am eighteen so I am not breaking any drinking laws.... If laws exist anymore that is...." I said to myself, legs out in front of me, elbow resting on the pulled out fridge drawer and holding the bottle in it, the other in my lap.
I drank it and got up, grabbing a few plastic bottles as those couldn't break and made my way back to the kitchen.
I looked around but there was no fridges here so I went up the staircase to a secondary kitchen where there were fridges.
I opened one and there was eggs, cakes, fruits, cheese, all good stuff.
I went to the cold chamber for food that I had no idea how it was called and I opened it, meats, olives, milk.
"Bingo." I said as my stomach growled.
