I walked through the empty zoo in the north of the city across the bridge, in the old world it would have been terrifying to see the tiger exhibit empty but now it was slightly less scary since there was always that nagging 'you can die at any moment' feeling that kept us alive.... Just slightly... There is still a tiger somewhere...
I picked up a flyer from the ground.
"I can't help but wonder how much he won't get to live through." I turned back, holding the flyer to show Vic.
"Well we better keep a library, we can't lose everything to this end." She said, dad was sent out for more wire and chargeable batteries, maybe we could afford more electricity then only for the fridge if we work on it.
Since no one was back home, despite the danger, it was ruled that we'd take Hope with us in a baby carrier, he can't be left alone that's for sure.
I smiled, despite it being a girly name usually, Hope was still a good name for him.
Vic was a better shot then I was at the start, she did have a gun when we met and one year to practice so no surprise, she was with a handgun for that reason while I was still the melee fighter game character I guess.
I tucked the flyer in my pocket, walking a good few feet away from them, masked and gloves with my goggles as blood stained my uncovered forearms, I am not taking risks.
He was a bit too young for it but was put in a baby carrier with small pillows to pad it out and hold him in plac-- I tore my eyes from them and swung.
My bat bounced off as I stumbled back and pulled the cop knife-dagger thingy I got clipped to my belt and stabbed it through the face of the husk.
"Ew, type C." I muttered, lucky I had that knife on me, these fuckers are fast... Tho I no longer an scared like I was last year.
"Are you alright?"
"I'm fine." I held the knife as the body slid off it and collapsed on the ground.
I crouched down and took my lighter, burning the clothes and watching if the fire would spread, when it didn't spread further then the husk I sighed and backed off.... Lucky, our clothes burn quite easily.
"Be careful."
I smiled even if the mask hid it.
"I never like taking risks that don't have a worthy enough reward." I said.
"I know I heard you but still, it is only us four, I don't want to lose someone else even if we've only met a month ago."
"I know, I don't want to either."
I changed my gloves out as I walked and put on new, clean ones, after I wiped my hands down with wet-wipes we found before rubbing disinfectant on my skin too.
I grabbed an alligator plush off the still full gift-shop display, looking at all the things left behind by humanity.
"You'd have been a little kid's favorite toy I am sure." I told the plush and turned too the mother-son duo. "Here, I cleaned off, there is no danger."
She grabbed it from my hands.
"I am sure he'll love it." She said with a smile like I did too.
"I know he will, Mr. Whiskers might be the only animal with birds he might see, the rest hiding or dead... I can't tell much but they better be hiding..." I thought, looking at the birds I spotted in the sky, soon either we go vegan from the lack of meat but protein is needed or we learn how to fish and catch birds... Or are lucky and animals just wonder in.
"Hey?" I called out. "Lets head home, I have an idea which I wanna check out."
"Like?"
"There was a little farm I saw on the edge while going out of town for a day.... Some animals are crafty fuckers.... Mostly chickens, they eat almost everything, like if you crack an egg open they'll eat it, I don't think it is far thinking they'd cannibalize hatched chicks."
"Seriously Andie?"
"What?! I can have hope for chickens, it is not the weirdest thought!"
"It's been a year, their water or something would have run out."
"I still want to head out there to check okay? I can have hope can't I?"
"You can.... Just don't let it swell too high."
