I sighed.
I already ate some of the perishable and I know I will need food.
"Well I need to visit the mall." I spoke to myself.
I looked into the mirror on what was once the directors desk, my own eyes mocked me, how bright they still are.
"Well move it Andie you don't have all day." I told myself, leaving the office.
I grabbed a bag from one of the classes and put it on to not empty out mine, I took my bat with me and the ladle, I don't know it feels wrong being separated from either right now, they helped me survive until now, I also had water and a pack of crackers in my bag.
I pulled the map out.
"I just need to get over the bridge, the mall will be near... Down right." I folded it again.
I walked out into the court, I need to set up tarps or something over the gate, I don't want husks to gather there if they see me and draw others close.
I pushed what was once a big green bin for trash and on wheels to the wall and laid it on its side, letting me climb and sit on the wall, it wouldn't be hard to find something else to get me over it.
I hopped down and walked towards the bridge with nothing but road ahead between it and the school.
I walked towards it, cars piled on it in ways I thought only possible in movies, some here, others there.
I walked in the middle of the large bridge, holding the bat with one hand and resting it in my other hand as I walked around cars.
"What is there?" I approached and with a small running start put my hand on the hood of a car and vaulted my feet over it to get over the car blockage, not wanting to walk around it.
There was torn up black and yellow tape, corpses that weren't alive, guns.
"Hmm." I picked up a handgun, aimed, before putting it down, it was no use for me yet I would hurt myself more using it then anything and if someone was alive they could have use for it... I need to read up on gun safety and how to use it too, not just survival books... I need to learn so much to survive.
I took a deep breath as I approached the end of the bridge with a husk standing with it's back towards me, almost like a statue, you can do this Andie.
"Die." I whispered and swung at its head and heard a crunch, the body collapsing.
I held my breath, trying to slow my fast heart-rate.
"It's not human.... It's not human.... It's not..." I breathed out, bat trembling in my hold for a while as I walked passed it.
There were parts of the city with smaller individual houses, these are older homes before these apartments were built around them with the city so less of the skyline was blocked out when these were built first.
"I wonder.... How far have the husks spread? Just here? Other countries? Continents?" I shook away my thoughts to escape the oncoming dread of being the last survivor of humanity, no I can't be the only one that got lucky enough. "I was lucky and I need to survive, for myself and for you two who died so I could live."
I passed the houses, trying to imagine everyone's life, what was left behind, what changed, what left.
I arrived to the mall front and it felt like I could finally breath as I entered, ducking under the half closed metal shutters.
It was surprisingly lit with neon lights, maybe a backup generator, I wish the school had one, the microwave in the cafeteria might have worked still in that case.
"Okay." I sighed through my nose, shuffling down the aisles but I only found two husks, they were getting easier to dispose of lucky me.
I went around the store, putting all I might need in my backpack, just shoveling it in: Med-kit, lighter, matches, watches, Swiss army knife, needle, thread, compass, flashlight, rope and disinfectant.
I also made a detour for food I threw in one of those thick reusable bags they had: Fruit that's still good surprisingly, vegetables, cans of food, a can opener, bread, salt, sugar, honey and many more. I even threw in a small trowel with a selection of seeds because I know I'd forget them if I come around here next time.
I even made a little tour in the clothing section and stuffed a few things in the plastic hand bag too, finally getting some good normal gloves, I cannot hurt my hands or I can't survive.
I was happy with what I got and put another watch on my wrist, this was an old style, you'd need to wind it up each day but it was perfect for me, it would give me something like a routine and actually time as other watch batteries will fail once.
I grabbed a calendar and stashed it as I left.
The trip back was less stressful since I knew the area just a little bit.
I indeed did fine a bin to push to the wall and climb over, I used my bat to push it away so no one could climb it would moving it back in place.
I put my bags down inside and went to the gym room, looking around and grabbing other Yoga mats.
I took the Swiss army knife and cut hols in the edges, I threaded the rope through and used it to tie the mats against the inside of the gate so no one could see in, I made sure to secure it well.
I sighed when I backed up from it.... There is so much to do alone...
