"Come on." I hissed.
I had enough of husks wondering everywhere and quite a while back, like months back, I found the metal fencing at the soccer stadium used to created the winding queue line.
I just lifted a part of the metal fence enough to unhook it and then started dragging it back home, I could make a bigger wall outside my school where only Type C and D will cause me hassle but keep most of the A and B's out.
But this was metal and it was heavy.
I started it at seven in the morning and it was ten, I only had four pieces of the metal fence and was dragging the fifth.
There was quite a few husk corpses I'd need to burn later but now I am sweating up a storm for this fencing.
I was planing on blocking of the little road between the school and the building to the left of it, the one behind the book store and then block of the road between the bookstore and that building.
I sighed in relief when I got off the bridge, it was a trouble to weave between the cars on it, it was easier to move through them without a two meter long metal fencing
I pulled this one to the place between the bookstore and the other building, lifting it to hook the metal sticking out the side into the holes on the other and pushed it.
They made a slight V shape as there was not enough space to straighten both out but they were in place.
"I now need the concrete." I groaned, there was a mall near. I bet they have concrete mix already packed up, all I need is water if I remember well and that I have enough of, I need to fix these to the ground so they can't move and maybe if this is secure enough I could open the school's gate.... No, stupid idea, I can never, that must remain closed in case the other defenses fall.
I blew air out of my nose as I knew I needed one my metal fencing for the upper part of the forming wall and honestly I didn't want to got get it but I also need to burn the bodies, I am never again making the mistake of letting a bird or any animal eat from the corpses I kill.
I rubbed my forehead, walking back towards the soccer stadium for my last piece of metal to completely my current plan.
"There." I said, between the school and the building it was easier to align the metal fencing.
I pulled my map out and sharpied over the now partial blocked off areas.
The little space behind the school can easily be blocked off and husks can't climb the banking of the riverside so I am safe on that front.
I walked home, it was passed lunch time and I am hungry.
I gave Whiskers his meal and washed the can out with a bit of water before walking to the roof.
I was planing on putting a bit of dirt in it and making some basil or some other herb grow in it, my patch of 1/3 dirt roof was growing stuff with the other part of it for potted plants and the water collection system for it.... All of that was good, but I could always afford more food reserves.
But that plan was soon stopped as I heard flapping.
The mouse trap, even if I didn't believe in it, had caught a target.
I watched the pigeon flap one of its wings but the rest of the body unmoving.
I put the can down and approached the bird.
"I am sorry." I grabbed it, one hand around the body and immobilizing the wing, the other lifting the metal of the trap.
I sighed and twisted my arms as I grabbed it head before straightening them out suddenly and by consequence, twist the bird's head around with a snap.
Killing something that was barely alive was one thing, killing a human was another and it seems killing something that was not at all affected by this mess was a whole other bucket of worms to deal with... It was sad.
I laid the bird on the edge of the roof and stood.
I jogged inside and gathered a few useless book, discarded packets and just not useful things and also aluminium foil, I then went back to the roof and put them in the metal cylinder and lit it on fire, not the aluminium.
I grabbed the bird and, just to make myself feel a bit better, did the catholic cross with my hands over my chest but it didn't really help, I used to do this a lot before this mess as a what if in case he existed up there, almost like a I do this and you do that in exchange. Never worked, hell I knew from the start it wouldn't since I usually didn't waste time with it nowadays.
I cringed at the start but it got better as I was plucking the feathers out and making a pile of it at my feet.
"I am sure birds' insides are edible, I saw chicken stomachs and guts in the mall." I cringed again, I never opened those rotting packs of sealed meat, they ARE sealed but after four years even that failed.
I pulled as much of the feathers out as I could before wrapping the bird in the foil, tightly in a ball, and threw it in the fire.
It should cook it through.
Should.
I sat back on the lawn chair with a sigh, watching the flames in the silence.
It was easier to kill then the fish... Maybe because of the fact I prefer chicken, turkey, duck to fish, I only like salmon and I am more then sure that fish won't be swimming in my river.
I sighed, looking at the sky, a little darker then before, must be around five, a few hours before sunset, usually sets around seven in march.
I then glanced at the feathers, I could find a use for them, I have all the time in the world and many, many books at my disposition, who knows I'll learn fletching arrows just for the fun of it, I could even learn to shoot one.
"Pew." I said, mimicking firing an arrow from the invisible bow.
I could become master of any craft given enough time and time is the only thing I have nowadays even if sometimes even that this moment seems short.
I leaned back in the chair, pulling my trusty notebook out and started writing down all the ideas I had that I could do and could learn since having a goal is what helps us live and survive.
I need to live so I can remember them.
I need goals.
