I shouldn't go back.... Was what I told myself each time I did.
And still I went back.
I still went back to see Ed at least once a week if not more.
"You know your dog can be let out." I pointed at the door with dangerous dog written on it and sometimes we'd hear claw scratching or a growl but never much.
"She was a rescue, I got her four years ago at the start, she only loved me and would grow aggressive with others, she even bit my nephews when they started to live with us... She was such a nice girl at the start.... This world changed the pour thing into a scared little thing." He said sadly.
I'd be sad if I was forced to lock Whiskers away too, I can't live without that little dude anymore.
"I get it man, at least she can come out and play with you, I am surprised she hasn't eaten any of the chickens." I said, having named the chickens and the rooster, it is said humans can pack bond with anything and I think it is true..... I bonded with a plant I call Jeremy.
The chickens were not creatively named, it was Einz, Zwei, Drie and Vier for the rooster.... literally one, two, three and four in German.
I put down the sandwich I was eating before, Ed had showed me how to make bread with the wheat, water and salt and we were eating the slight bit under-cooked bread with some canned tomatoes and canned pickles and meat from a rabbit trap he had set up and caught one with... He offered me the hide of it which I needed to convince him to not go fetch.... It was not a ground breaking sandwich but it was something I never thought I'd eat again.
But my mind was flooded with what died with humanity.... Many languages and cultures, many words, names, translations, memes, games, stories.... We've lost just so much us survivors.
"So are you staying tonight?"
"Yeah I'll stay." I nodded. "Whiskers will be mad but I left him food before I left."
"Oh these pets can be really noisy little buggers."
"Yeah, you should really let her out, she will scratch up your door, I'll go home."
"No no it's fine."
I was in the guest bedroom, feeling a bit off and thirsty.
I opened the door.
"You should remain calm dear, you know what happened last time."
I exited to room, walking out, the wood creaking under my steps only to hear the door slam and more scratching.
"What are you doing up dear?" I heard and I don't know, it seemed odd in the low light of the moon, reminding me of movies.
"I am thirsty, I was going to get water from the pump." I shrugged.
"No, the night is dangerous, come with me." I followed him, the odd feeling when I passed the door, stopping slightly as I stepped in something with my blood. "Here."
I grabbed the glass he held out.
"I brought a jug in before sunset." He smiled.
"Thanks." I waved as I sent back to the room and closed the door.
I stared at the glass of water and drank from it before setting it on the night stand and going asleep, kicking the socks off and sleeping under the covers.
It was the sun that woke me up and not Ed today.
I sat up stretching and grabbed my socks since I didn't brought spare pairs.
I pulled them on, still groggy.
"Oh fuck it." I said, I hopped I stepped into water and it would have dried but it felt flaky on my feet.
I rubbed tiredness out of my eyes and bent my leg up.
I looked down and my eyes went wide.
There was a dried spot of red on my socks.
I looked at the ground and saw a foot print left by me and it was red too.
I've seen enough of this to know what it is.
"Blood."
