"You need to work to stay here." I reminded her, annoyed.
I turned away from the pouting girl as I was digging a hole near one of the school's tree's roots as one of the strawberry plants on the roof was outgrowing its pot and the soil pilled up there was not that deep after all, here it could grow and maybe I'll have a way bigger bush and more of it.
"Aren't you bored of working tho?"
"Look Jasmine, I didn't survive sitting on my ass, there is always a goal and things to do." I said annoyed, why is it so hard to help? "Now fill that watering can and water the other plants around the trees, go."
"You know what's red and bad for your teeth?" She said, also annoyed. "A fucking brick."
I sighed as she begrudgingly did it, I get it.... You were free to do shit before but this is my town, my rules, you live with me you pull your weight.
I should also get back to the concrete and metal walls I've been doing, I need to secure it more since I now need to look after someone else.
She is smaller then me, even with the bin to climb over the wall it was not easy for her to get in... But....
I dropped the little trowel and dusted my hands on my jeans leaving dirt on my thighs and still some on my hands.
"Come here." I called to her as she was glaring holes into the plants. "You know how to fish?"
"Uhhu." She nodded, looking away from the plants.
"I have a fishing rod and stuff, you can stop watering the plants if you catch us some food." I said, I only caught two other fish since I dragged this equipment back with me so yeah, I haven't caught another bird yet nor really tried to eat the mushrooms yet nor had I tried to carry the half rotten box over the wall.
"Deal!" She said, dropping the can that made a loud clank.
I groaned and grabbed it off the ground.
"Kid sound brings the husks in."
"Oh don't worry they are slow."
"You'd be surprised, I don't see a lot of them but other sorts exist."
"Really? I mean I saw one that looked like the hunchback of Nostradamus but nothing much."
"I don't know why some are so different but if one doesn't look like a human they are capable of way more.... Leave your old bat here and use that one." I pointed at the one I barely used, the one I taped and secured nails too. "We'll make you one exactly like the other or try but I don't want it to break and for you to die now. If it breaks your dad's weapon breaks"
"... You promise? You promise we'll make one?"
"I promise, now go grab it and bring me mine too while I get the fishing supplies over the wall."
It was not only the fishing supplies but the child itself I lifted over the wall.
"You are so strong!" She said in awe as I hoped on the bin on the other side, it made a popping noise.... The plastic IS four years old and plastic likes the break easier the older it gets, I should find something more solid to jump on.
"Not that strong." I said, picking the fishing rod and box up.
"No screw that! You easily hope that tall wall! I can not even lift my own weight." I didn't show my surprise, just what life have you lived on your side of this miss little girl? How did you get this far?
"You can't? You need to get stronger, I won't be able to always lift you over the wall if we are to live together."
"As if I could get as strong as you."
"I wasn't always like this." I carefully made my way down the side of the river bank.
"You lying." She joined me down here.
"I am not, I was eighteen when this start, still older then you are but I was not ready unlike you who has knowledge of what your father taught you, all I was is a teen going to school and specializing in biologic studies and wanting to go learn more about that and one that learnt the basics of parkour to make her father angry.... I had no skills, I picked everything up because I wanted to survive, I can break in a husks's skull with one swing yes but that's thanks to the terrified girl that made her arms sore by needing to swing at weak spots or several times at the skull. Everything comes with training."
"So cool, I wanna strong like you so like we two will be the best." She grabbed the fishing rod I held out to her, easily casting the line far into the river unlike how it took me quite a few tries to get anything.
"This is not a competition." I said, watching the floater in the water. "This is a war between the dead and the living."
"If you say so."
"You have a lot to learn." I said. "Stay here, I'll be right back, I need things for something I've been building so I'll go get them and check in."
"I am not that weak."
"Just saying." I walked away, time to make the wall bigger.
