"Are you sure this is a good idea?" Jasmine asked and I can understand her fully.
We had a schedule for the passing days now, something to do, habits, we had wrote out the basic things to do each day on the chalkboard in the classroom in front of the office, things that weren't obvious like resource runs or feeding the animals.
Monday: min. 2 hours of learning, water + tending to the plants, cleaning out new husks
Tuesday: min. 2 hours of learning, checking traps
Wednesday: fish, gather wall building supplies
Thursday: checking traps, water + tending to the plants
Friday: min. 2 hours of learning, cleaning out new husks
Saturday: checking traps, cleaning clothes, inspect weapon integrity
Sunday: fish, gather fire 'wood'
It was by far not all we did in those days, hell it was not even half of it but that was what I wanted to at least get done that day.
Jasmine is still young and this is still a school, she needs to learn about stuff to survive even if it seems redundant like how to do big divisions without a calculator, there exist solar powered ones but to split resources for future use you could need one and not have it with you, a pen would be enough in that case.
I tried being a teacher even if the survival aspect is what I am good at now, still.
"Yes I am sure." I said, noticing I was far in my thoughts and didn't provide an answer."
"Alright."
We were sitting on the rooftop, my in my lawn chair and her in one we brought up from inside the school, this whole town is mine to take stuff from so I could get a pair of chairs from a restaurant or something, they look more comfortable even tho mossy.
Plant life it taking over after all.
The barrel I used to burn things in was filled with stuff to burn again and a grill rack was set across it, Jasmine poking the three fish we caught with a stick, I let her do it, she is much better at this part since she camped a lot in her life, holding Whiskers by the scruff or the idiot was ready to jump over the open flame for the fish.
"But we are wasting precious time."
"I know but humans don't work well in monotony, despite it all, burnout is still possible now, so taking a break once in a while is a good idea."
"Okay! Hey Andie?"
"Yeah?"
"When do you think other's will come?" I sighed, she is still a kid, despite it all, somethings will always be thought of with a kid's mind until she grows up more.
"I don't know, I am sorry."
"Nah it's fine, I like it with you." She smiled, I offered a halfhearted back, my hand holding my head up, other still on the idiot cat.
"I do too."
"Yay... So when they come where will they live?"
"I guess with us even tho I am not a fan of new people nowadays, there is always risks."
"Yeah I guess you are right, what if we make one of the apartments or houses near here pretty and safe? If we find the keys they can even lock the doors for safety at night and we can have our house for ourselves."
"If you want to do that come up with the plan, the execution of it and what is needed for it yourself, you need to learn how to make plans and stick to them, I have a handy little list of things I thought up I noted down in my notebook of what I could do, every little thought is noted down."
"Oooh got it, then can we get me a notebook? So I can write my stuff in it?"
"Sure thing but keep an eye on the fish."
"Okay okay."
I looked off at the familiar sight from up here tho it seemed more and more green, almost each day it seemed but I know that is not true, plants need time to grow.
There are a lot of places I need to still visit in this town to get things I couldn't get in other places, well no I could find them in other places but there is still more changes to find gas masks against smoke and stuff in a fire station and not a mall.
Once the unmaintained building start to collapse and be unusable we will need to have become fully autonomous in food and all, no town stands forever, a part of this once might, if others come and we keep the needed pieces together but it still will not be most of it, hell, maybe a building I never saw and never went near already collapsed and I will never know what was in it.... Buildings ARE iron, concrete, wood, so on and so forth, without machinery many of the rubles can't be moved plus even if it doesn't collapse completely it will be really dangerous the enter.
I looked at Jasmine, child so oblivious to my hell I call my mind, this was the world she grew up in almost, with all the time she spent camping in the wild, she grew up in survival and training for it, it will be easier for her.... I am glad.
I looked at the view again.... I am really glad.
