"It already started." I stated the obvious but still, seeing it for the first time have an effect on someone.
Seeing something new in this husk filled world is always scary, it usually never means good.
I was standing on the roof of an apartment building, Jasmine sitting near the edge while I had one leg up on it, she was using binoculars to look on while I was using the scope on the rifle to look on.
The wheat field, the part we didn't cut off.... I am so happy we are done with that but off topic, the part we left between the town to the left of us, the town I shot that woman that tried stealing my bike, was being pushed and flattened.
Through the scope it was just a sea of husks, many A and B type but I did see C and D types and I think I caught a glimpse of a few I never saw but was unable to find them in the crowd.
"Oh my god." I gotta agree with Jasmine on that one, I thought we'd see smaller hoards at first but I guess we can never know what size they will reach, maybe this will be the biggest we'll ever see or maybe the smallest, we can only live on and hope it is the first option. "What do we do Andie?"
"Nothing." I lowered the rifle and looked at her. "The best we can do is stay up here to avoid the sniffers, those fuckers can jump, they can get in the School yard so it is not safe either, the furthest we are from the ground is currently the safest, munchers don't lift their gaze to look at the sky and won't notice."
"So we just sit here as this huge group passes?"
"Yeah, unless they change direction for whatever reason some will walk along the bridge and get caught up on the cars still on it, some will get stuck on the fencing I created and those we'll clean out but most will get washed away into the ocean."
"The fishes will feast."
Dread slapped me, glancing towards the south at where the ocean was... Fish don't think like land animals, they eat all.
"Oh fucking dammit." I slapped a hand on my forehead, thinking about the ecosystem collapse that might happen in the oceans now that I realized this.
From what I remember not all fish are carnivores and not all of those fish live in the ocean, sharks are the most bite-y ones.... Lets just hope by the gods that either the virus dies when outside a host, the corpses decompose or something.
I think I now fear the ocean.
"Andie?" I shook my head, snapping from my thoughts, maybe we'll need to dig a pond instead of just making that park a farming ground and put the small fishes we fish into it and raise them for food because if the worst happens, anything not in a pond, lake, river could be infected.
"Sorry, distracted." I looked back at the hoard still at least half way through the distance between our town and the one over. "At least two maybe three hundred and way to far to shoot.... We'll be having another lazy day since we can't go home."
"Ah bummer."
"At least you don't get to hear me ordering you around." I sat on the edge. "You should be happy about that."
"I like helping you tho." She put the binoculars down. "This is my home too now so why wouldn't I do chores to maintain it?"
"You are a good kid, after this hoard it further away and crisis averted I think I'll teach you to shoot."
"Really?"
"It is a useful tool even if limited, we cannot make new bullets but sometimes a bullet is your best friend compared to the knife you always have or a bat."
"I saw bows in the stores, like sport bows and stuff, that would be cool!"
"I cannot shoot those."
"Awe... But maybe we can learn together no?"
"Sure... But first a gun, I have my trusty ladle and bat with my but I carry a knife and a gun I got from the police station too plus a rifle from time to time, it is really useful knowing how to shoot. It is already June and the days are getting long so we'll have time to do a lot, we have years ahead of us both."
"Yeah, us both." I said as she smiled before looking back at the husks as I just looked at the sky.
June, the days are getting hotter, less rain compared to normal, lets hope that nothing happens upstream in the river.
I still knew that once in my hellish life we'll need to leave this town to explore, I barely know the town to the left and nothing or the Northern one. For our safety we'll need to leave this town and explore the other ones.
I looked at the wheat being flattened, we worked hard but we cut enough of it for it to be far enough of our town for safety and from here it looks like it is just a field between Rain point and the town over so if we were to set fire to the plants I don't think it will cause a town fire.
"Maybe we should burn it." I told myself, the wheat touched by the husks is lost anyway. "Maybe we should..."
