I was still and will be for a while unsure about them.
I swung my trusty bat at the sniffer that rushed us the moment we exited the apartment, hearing a small gasp from the two following us... As I tell myself, this world made me a husk of myself, numb to all because this world no longer scare me, I guess they kept more of their humanity.
"Don't get too shocked, type Cs are way worst then these ones." Jasmine said much friendlier with them already then I was.
"That's because of the mall incident with them, trust me, type D are worst, these fucker can jump." I let Jasmine light its clothes on fire, the husk bear couldn't be easily lit on fire so we'll need to look out for the following months because of the carrion birds being able to get infected.
God do I had crows because of that.
"You burn zombies? That's a waste." Adar said but both parts sounded questioning.
"Zombies?" Jasmine asked, looking at me.
"Technically that's what munchers and Husks are called in stories on TV before the Great Silence." I explained to her. "But yeah, animals can get infected and the virus survives in liquid so limiting the amount of scavenging that can be done should be a must even if healthy animals avoid eating diseased human corpses." I explained, yawning as I couldn't get myself to sleep for long, fearing the danger they represented for us.
Lucy still refused to speak to me.
"Was that what that thing was?"
"Yeah, looked like a diseased bear and we know bears attack when surprised so it bit a husk and tada, your burly chaser."
"Husk huh? Why do you call the zombies that?" They followed me as I walked out into my city.
"At that start I didn't want to call them zombies as it seemed too human to me, husks being something different, zombies were invented by humans and I felt better with just husks... Now the name stuck, you can't tell me these are similar to any zombies you saw in movies."
"I call them munchers tho!"
"I know Jassy, good name, good name." I pat her head making her laugh with a smile.
"I think I understand, I called them zombies because it was a fictional term we already knew since it was corpses coming back to life but should I call them husks too?"
"Call them however you want, we don't care." I shook my head. "It was long ago last time I cared for their names."
"Cool, cool."
I was happy little to now stragglers were left in our traveled area, walking to the bookstore near to the school and going to the store behind it, it was a furniture store.
"I am working on closing a part off around this school but it is my home, I don't yet trust you so you can stay in here, no husks have broken through my metallic wall here so yeah, you are safe."
"Wow okay nice." He seemed truly happy with this. "Thank you a lot."
"Yeah of course, settle in and I'll come by in an hour or two to show you around to important places in here, if we'll live together we need to rely on each other. With Jasmine we already do a lot and feel like our days are not long enough so you need to carry yours weights."
"Of course." He nodded his head. "We'll pay back to risk you took to help us, right Lucy?" But she stayed silent.
I sighed.
"Look, I wouldn't have shot them if I knew they had any chances to live, if they could have ran I wouldn't have shot." She just nodded.
"You think they will be a danger?" Jasmine asked, looking at the side of the shop from the top of the school.
"I don't know Jassy, I am doing my best to show them we won't be if they cooperate with us." I was trying despite my mistrust and the bruise she left on my face. "But I won't show them all right away, I can't trust them just yet."
"Yeah it's fine, thanks for agreeing to save them."
"Yeah sure, I hope it was worth the bullets."
"I think it will be." She chuckled. "What will you show them anyway?"
"Not the school that's for sure but the new garden, maybe chicken to see if they can be trusted with animals, if one of them goes missing we'll know who did it." I said, stroking Whiskers' back as he finally found us and was rubbing against my legs. "Plus I'll made them a basic map and explain a few things so we are on the same page."
"Can I come along?"
"I would prefer you in here but sure, I could use backup if anything happens."
"Right!"
"Okay now stop messing around and go water the plants at the foot of the trees while I water these ones."
"Always working with you." She grumbled but it wasn't serious as I shooed her away.
"Get it done and then you can relax, Jesus you are lazy for a girl in the end of times."
She laughed as she ran inside.
"Careful!" I called after, even with all the doors and blinds pulled away it was still darker inside with only natural light lighting the place up as most our little electricity was for the ones light bulb and fridge.... I guess I should add more onto the system since we an ocean side town so there is wind often, that's why the lawn windmills are making enough energy after all.... And maybe there is law waterwheels we could put in the river? So many things to make and forget I thought about.... Jesus indeed.
