"Why are dragging these with us?" Lucy asked as I had grabbed a loose shopping cart and pulled it along, having told her to do the same.
We were going to the one right next to what was the zoo once.
"We are going to raid a police station on the opposite side of town, I don't know you but I don't feel like doing back and forths all day, last one I cleared out took a long time and it was closer." I said. "And we'll need to find you guys goggles and some masks."
"Masks? Are you reviving Covid? Humanities biggest fear before.... This."
"Very funny." I mocked. "Am I the only one that thought to wear gloves and masks to keep little droplets of bodily fluids of splashing around and into places that could absorb it and infect me?"
"Jeez, learn to take a joke."
"This is life or death, nothing to joke about, I didn't make it because of jokes."
"Alright alright I got it."
"Okay so when we get back we'll store the weapons in the School, I don't trust you enough to let you do this and backstab me." I looked back, I caught the displeased look. "Well, you have rights to weapons but please, let me have my peace of mind."
"As long as you'll share in the future, could be useful to protect our place and more useful if it was not only you that had functioning ones."
"Fair." I said with a sigh. "For now tho, blunt or bladed weapons."
"Sure sure, let me get a spoon."
"I have a ladle as a weapon Lucy, don't underestimate a spoon... We are here." This cop station was built similarly to the previous one, there would be a third in town but we'll hit that one another time if this one fills the carts, if not, we'll go down south and there.
I grabbed the bolt cutters from my backpack to cut the chains off the gates.
I glanced at the razor wire on the top of the fence and decided to cut it another time, I would like to use it in several places, one of the most obvious being the half cement half metal walling off of our living area: would scare humans and mutilate husks.
Sure it would spread their infected blood around but the virus fuckers don't live for long nor move around with legs, I checked it long ago after all.
"Here." I pulled out and held my bat to her. "Don't break it." I said, not really believing she could. "This place had been on lock down for a long time." I kicked the rusty chains. "Either the husks that put these on hung themselves or they are still there."
I pulled my gun out, I was getting better day to day tho bullets were limited but I am not watching her die after I let her in.
"I don't think I could, this layer of tape holds all strongly." She swung it as we pushed the carts to the door of the building.
"It is four years old tape that bathed in husk blood tho I took care of it to make it last, it is just important to me... It was the first person I killed even if it was an accident, his bat helped me survive since then."
There was silence as I kicked in the door because it wouldn't open, the rusted hinges screaming in their metallic voices.
I kicked up, foot impacting a husk in the chest and putting it out of its misery with a bullet through the brain.
I heard a whack behind me but I currently saw no more in this little front area.
I quickly pulled the carts inside.
"Search the bodies and grab any keys you might find." I say but hold out plastic gloves to her. "The armory might be open since they needed it to defend themselves but we never know."
She grabbed them.
We made quick work, fell into silence as we worked, sadly since this building was small the armory was too but we still grabbed anything we found relevant and that was a weapon in any sense of the term, the broom handle with a sword tied to it in my home is and was a weapon even before that sword was tied to it.
They were brass knuckles, batons, crowbars, rifles, guns, ammo, knives, cuffs and way more but most was in no more then four copies of each.
We had even gone to the second station and cleaned that one out with a smaller weapon haul but more ammunition then in the other place, that was done too before she spoke again.
"How do you deal with the guilt?"
I looked behind as she was already staring at me.
"Why you ask?"
"Just curious..."
"You... Don't deal with it, you just live with it... There had been moments only fate stopped me from ending my run because of it but even if humanity deserves to die, individuals don't, and those that did die deserve to be remembered so I remember everyone I met, killed or was told about.... My father had met people, he only mentioned them once by name and I will remember them because if I don't then who would.... I live with guilt to remember those that didn't get that chance."
"Doesn't it get lighter to carry?"
"Not really, you just get stronger but well, we are a team now unfortunately for my sanity so you are not alone, come on, lets get these back."
"Right..."
