"What are you doing?" I heard from my left as I worked away with Jasmine.
"Hi Adar." This morning with Jasmine we went out to the outdoor decoration parts of the mall and got a cart filled with those stones you could buy previously, it was only of use to the small houses in right side of the city since those had gardens but now these slabs of stone would have another use.
"Hi, so what are you doing?"
"Can't you see?" I asked, holding the heavy sledgehammer we also brought back, dropping it on a tile and watching it break.
"We are making a fire pit!" Jasmine said, having been taking the pieces and pilling them up in a large circle with little scoops of a plastic bin with wet concrete in it to stick the pieces together.
"I thought it could be a place for all of us since despite it all we live together and you can't have a fire in your home, only on the roof while I have a whole yard for myself." I was trying to be nice. "Plus could be used for way more then just cooking stuff."
"That's really good, what if I went to find chairs? Some plastic chairs or something."
"Sure, go to the one next to the chicken park, that one should have those."
"Right away."
I went back to my job.
"You are nice with them." I looked at Jasmine. "I like it." She smiled.
"You made me save them, the least I can do is try to believe they are good people. Lucky us they have been for now." I said. "And they follow the rules better then you."
She stuck her tongue out at me.
"Well you can say you are the boss here, the leader, I guess they understand that."
"Sure." I was only enforcing a few rules because I wanted to be sure of our safety even if I still have doubts about them, you can't blame me about that. "I can go on alone, please check the traps you set in the sewers and those on the roof."
"I still can't believe those keep catching birds once in a while, mousetraps used as birdtraps, but sure." She stood up, stretching, grabbing the bat full of nails that I had gave her, I still haven't helped her remake her old bat which I should do soon, she's been not so subtly reminding me.
"Be careful Jass, scream if needed."
"Right right...Hey! Why did the picture get arrested?" I sighed with the hint of a smile.
"Why?" I asked, seems like she is never running out of jokes.
"It got framed."
"Damn you."
I was left alone only for about a minute before Lucy was back, riding in on the bike she borrowed from somewhere just like how I got mine.
I had asked her to do something to be sure anyone that would dare to come in town to get the feeling that this town was occupied even before we saw them.
It was nothing grand and scary, just having her spray paint 'Rain point' on the side of every building on the perimeter of the town and stray generously over the signs on the outside that said 'welcome to' with the old name of the town on it with a large X and finally, putting 'LEAVE' on the two roads that lead out of the town.
"Ran out of paint?" I asked, dropping the hammer on another tile.
"Yeah, lot more work to do here then I through despite two sides of the town being in contact with the ocean." She grabbed another can from the pack of eight that was discarded near to me.
"Yeah well it is work that needs to be done." I leaned on the hammer as I saw her put the cans in her bag, just watching.
I watched the handcuffs half hanging out of her pocket and to the ones I still had around my wrist. I gave everyone, even Jasmine, one pair just in case.
I still am not sure what I can tell them, they know nothing about my past life and what I told them that was something little.
"Careful out there." I waved her off as I went back to my work on building up the fire pit as the concrete would set after a while.
I wonder how they would react to hearing my story, what I did.
The key instance here being how would they react, how Jasmine would, if I told them I left a boy even younger then her suffer through being turned into a husk for my own curiosity.
Curiosity killed the cat but unfortunately the answer brought it back, it brought many back... Many, many, many....
I honestly wonder if I'll ever tell anyone, secrets are the end of all trust but in this world who isn't lying? Lying to other, lying to ourselves.... Only the selfish survive.
I finished setting the pieces I had in place and put another slab and dropped it, it breaking around the edges already and snapping in two.
I picked the hammer up and dropped it on the bigger pieces to break them more.
Will working together triumph over the selfishness of the world?
I was alright alone, I became worried together... I guess only time will tell and I hope to all that is above that I made the good choices until now and haven't been running myself off the edge towards certain death.
