Breaking the door in was not hard, everything not taken care of will break in such a world purely through the passage of time.
I shine the flashlight in. This little home almost seemed lived in, almost.
"Wow, it's been a while since we went inside a real house." Jasmine said from behind me.
"You could access them if you wished any day but yeah, it has been years... Now go back outside and wait for me."
"Sure."
I walked through the house, everything still how it was last left by the inhabitants I was expecting to find as the door was locked.
The smell of dust was the strongest as I walked up the creaking stairs, kicking up a small cloud of it each time I stepped. That made me pull my goggles on with a mask to not breath it in as I grabbed my bat.
I made my way down the hallway, listening but hearing nothing and letting my curiosity get the best of me, opening the doors to the rooms.
I didn't find a husk like I awaited... Or at least not in the state I expected.
The corpse wordlessly reached out to me as I looked around the room quite disconcerted since there were no other people that with husks in here. I set my flashlight on the bedside table.
I pushed its hands away as the body spun and I looked it over, my suddenly fast heartbeat freezing, no wounds.
Can't be, I checked my blood and the twins back years ago and there was clearly signs you need to be infected to change but the problem I have here is the state of the house and the corpse.... It was hanging off a noose.
What other thing struck me as weird was the normalcy of the home, like my apartment when this started, a small radio on the bedside table and discarded plastic boxes in the corner of the room that didn't even contain rot, it was so dry and dusty in here all that was left of that was dark stains on the carpet.
There is only one explanation to this tho I will still use the microscope I brought home to test a blood sample to know if it is not a case of the Walking Dead virus now but what I thing happened here is this husk is of the first infected in this town and they hung themselves to die by their own means.
That's the only thing that makes sense tho this is another thing I will never prove fully as I do not know how the outbreak started and I never will.
I walked to the window and forced it open, I can't have this house rot away, it is a closed system tho I need to get this corpse out.
I swung at the arms, breaking them.
I grabbed the knocked over chair and stood it up and got on it, pulling my knife out and slicing the rope away, it looked like it was about the break anyway.
I hopped off and quite easily grabbed and shoved the husk out of the window and heard it break itself on the ground.
"Jesus!" Jasmine jumped, the thing landing not for from her, she shined her own flashlight at me. "Careful there!"
"Sorry, put on gloves and protection before you touch this one, this muncher should absolutely be burnt."
"Alright."
While she did that, I leaned out of the window and grabbed the roof with the light held in my mouth, pulling myself out carefully and on it, leaving my bat inside.
I climbed, staying on my knees and hands as I climbed to the opposite side of the roof and slide down slowly, we were doing this by night since solar panels work away on their own and I would electrocute myself if I did it in the day.
I pulled a screw driver out and opened the metal box, tilting my head with the light so I could see what I was doing.
There was so much I had no idea what it meant or what it was. I was confused for a while before finding the output cable, it had the same symbol as on the batteries, thinking of that I'll need to put up more to not lose the potential energy this will get us.
I pulled it out and saw a slight spark, okay it works.... Tho I should have maybe taken it out more carefully.
I grabbed the light in my hand and stood, shining it around.
"Jass! Throw me the cable!" I called, leaning over the edge as she ran from the side of the husk fire to the cable she left on the ground and threw it, the coil unraveling and I barely caught the end of it. "Tape and glue it to the wall so the wind can't yank it around." I said, pulling the cable to the box and stepped on it to hold it there.
I crouched down and put a good few strips of tape down before I emptied a good portion of the caulk in I still had in the tube on it and carefully wired in the right parts of my cable into the parts I pulled out the one that had the electricity sent in the house.
Because of the cable I couldn't close it like before, there was a little gap so with more tape I covered all the sides of the electrical box before pulling out a plastic one out of my bag and putting it over it and, guess what, emptied the caulk on the edges to keep it from moving.... Sure I know it takes up to a whole day to fully set but that's why the tape it here.
I made my way back inside and close the window, grabbed the bat, closed the door of the room and the front door, pulling a few strips of tape and sticking the in a thick X in front of the door so no one could get inside so no rot or mold would be brought inside.
"Jass please, my map." I asked as I had given it to her, I'll need to get more from the restaurant I got these from and keep them tightly secured so we can always have a map of the town.
"Here yah go." She handed it to me, standing near the corpse fire, warming her hands, how oddly morbid.
I held the flashlight between my shoulder and head like we'd do with phones back then when we needed both hands, sharpy-ing on the map a red line that represented the electrical wiring present in the city.
Hmmm, I might also need new maps because this one is getting crowded with all my note taking on it.... Oh well, we'll see.
I put both away and grabbed the bat again.
"Come on, lets go home." I told her.
"Alright, I am getting tired." She grabbed the back of my hoodie with a yawn, covering her mouth with one hand.
"I can see that, you can sleep in tomorrow." With my watch we kept track of time but we still didn't find others like this one, wind up wristwatches but we did find those old wide up alarm clocks to wake up and not sleep in.
"Heck yeah." She yawned through it.
I led the way with the flashlight and bat in hand, Jasmine's one pointing at her feet as she hung her arm and the other held my hoodie.
Getting home was nice, getting out of the cold into a less cold space and if I was right which could only be seen in the morning when the solar panels start to work, we'll be able to heat this place with electrical and portable heater, maybe even ones we can charge in advance to have heat in the night.
She flopped on the couch after leaving her outside clothes on a mantel holder I dragged in, that means the coat and shoes, just to not dirty stuff around, I did too but laid on the mattresses.
I think the double layer mattresses are better but she likes it, it is not bad, I slept on it for years but this comfort is good and homely for me.
I threw a blanket over me and grabbed a pillow from the growing stacks of these things, it almost felt like a real bed, so close.
I glanced over, barely seeing anything but the window was left uncovered and I saw her still sleeping with the alligator, it peaking over her shoulder as she slept with her back to me.
I smiled a little, protect her from nightmares Gator, god knows her life is already one when she is awake.
I sighed, laying on my back, not being alone isn't that bad I guess.
