"Wait. Why does Kaia's name show up on this approval form? Is it... is it really Kaia? No way. Maybe it's just someone with the same name? Yeah, that's gotta be it, right?" Lailah asked.
Staring at the principal's stern, unmoved face, her own voice trailed off until it was barely a whisper.
Her expression turned from worried to downright hopeless, and before she knew it, she sank right down to the floor, totally defeated.
She remembered Kaia telling her straight up that if she wanted her gone, she could get her expelled—no questions asked.
Then Andrea popped into her mind. The time she'd come over just to stir up trouble and make things worse for her...
She felt like laughing and crying all at once.
'Who the fuck would ever guess Kaia was destined to be the future principal of Morganburg University? No way in hell anyone saw that coming!' Lailah thought.
Lailah just wanted to throw her head back and scream, let all her frustration pour out.
Everyone else in class had been waiting ages for Lailah to come back.
They were curious as hell, wondering why the principal would call in just a regular student like her.
But when she finally returned, Lailah looked totally drained, like every last ounce of hope had been sucked out of her.
"Damn, what happened to her? She looks like her whole world just came crashing down," one classmate whispered.
"Right? Seriously—what actually happened? Why is Lailah just standing there not saying a word?" someone else added, clearly impatient.
The gossip mill was in full swing, with everyone trying to piece together what had gone down.
Penny, who was already in the know, looked around smugly.
"What else could it be? She's obviously getting expelled," Penny said, her voice full of sarcasm.
"Penny, quit making stuff up! Lailah wouldn't get expelled for nothing. You just can't stand to see her doing well." One classmate jumped in to defend Lailah.
"Why would she get kicked out? Seriously, it just happened. how could you forget already?" Penny shot back.
"Oh, so you mean it's because of that bet between Lailah and Kaia?" another classmate chimed in, rolling their eyes.
"Yep," Penny replied with a smirk.
The rest of the class couldn't help but roll their eyes.
Right in the middle of all the chatter, Lailah marched straight up to Kaia.
She sucked in a breath and, with everyone watching, gave Kaia a bow.
"Kaia, I'm so sorry. I misjudged you—and yeah, I messed with you on purpose. I should've never made your life difficult," Lailah said, her voice shaky.
The room went dead silent.
Everyone was stunned.
Everyone in class was so thrown by Lailah's move that they started seriously questioning reality itself. It took a good few seconds before anyone snapped out of it, and then the whispering and gossiping exploded.
"Oh my god! Am I hallucinating or something? Did Lailah really just apologize to Kaia, and not just a casual 'sorry.' She actually did a bow! What on earth is happening here?" someone gasped.
The kid next to them, eyes wide in disbelief, blurted, "You're not seeing things. Seriously, this has to be a dream. Our whole class is literally dreaming right now."
Lailah remained bent at the waist, biting her lip, her eyes rimmed with red from holding back tears.
Kaia regarded her from above, looking aloof and indifferent.
Kaia said coolly, "So, you've figured it all out?"
"Yes, I know everything now. I'm really, really sorry! Please, I can't get expelled. My family isn't well-off; they've done everything just to put me through school. It took everything I had to get into Morganburg University. If I get kicked out, how am I even supposed to face them? How could I ever look my parents in the eye?" Lailah's voice shook with desperation.
Just the thought drained every last bit of fight out of her—even dying felt easier than dragging herself home in shame.
Kaia just stood there, watching her, her expression unreadable.
"If your family's struggling and you're their only hope, you should be working your ass off to succeed, not wasting time picking fights with your classmates.
"Or do you think just because you got into Morganburg University—just because you're graduating from a top school—that companies will automatically want you? If that's how you see it, you're way off," Kaia said, her voice sharp and unforgiving.
