"Sure, maybe you'll land a job, but what about a good one? Ever thought about joining a Fortune 500 company? Or actually making a real mark in your career?
"You really think college is the finish line? Listen—Morganburg University is only the starting line for you. If you want to shoot straight to the top, you'll need to push yourself even harder."
Lailah's tears started falling, hitting the floor with soft thuds. She kept her head down, unable to meet Kaia's gaze.
"I get it now. I know I messed up... I won't do it again. I'll study hard, I promise. I won't waste any more time or my life..." she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
Kaia nodded, satisfied. "Owning up to your mistakes and working to fix them is truly admirable. Since you realize where you went wrong, I'll give you a chance. Just make sure you don't mess it up."
"Thank you! Thank you!" Lailah sobbed even harder, overwhelmed with relief, tears flowing down her cheeks.
Everyone was utterly stunned, unable to process what they'd just witnessed.
Kaia and Lailah definitely didn't look like classmates. It felt more like a real teacher–student moment, with Kaia totally schooling her.
Meanwhile, the principal was watching the scene play out on his computer screen, absentmindedly stroking his beard.
"Just as I thought. Kaia really is the one destined to inherit everything from me. There's no one better," he murmured with pride.
It was not just her talent that set her apart. It was the kind of character she had, the stuff that really counted.
Finally, the bell rang, signaling the end of the day. Penny practically dragged Kaia out of the classroom and toward the school gates.
"Why are you in such a rush?" Kaia asked, laughing.
"Are you kidding? You promised to take me to the institute! Who wouldn't be excited about that?" Penny shot back, practically bouncing with energy.
Kaia chuckled and shook her head. "Just a heads-up. No taking pictures inside."
"Seriously, Kaia, you think I'd be that dumb? This is Dr. Bennett's Institute we're talking about—the number one lab in all of Wustriland! They're working on top-secret, world-class research.
"If I so much as pointed my phone at anything, I'd be toast! I wouldn't even dare," Penny grinned, nudging Kaia playfully.
As Penny was still chatting and dragging Kaia into the car, Griffin shamelessly forced his way in right behind them.
Penny shot Griffin an exasperated look, eyes rolling. "Why on earth are you here?"
With a sheepish, goofy grin plastered on his face, Griffin turned to Kaia. "Miss Bennett, could you maybe take me along for a tour too? I really wanna check out the institute!"
"Why should you get to come? Kaia and I are besties, plus my mom is basically her mom—no, her godmother, actually! We're definitely not strangers, so of course I get to go. You, on the other hand, should just go find something else to do," Penny shot back, shooing Griffin away.
Griffin protested, "Hey, come on! Kaia's my cousin's fiancée, so that totally makes her family. I'm not an outsider at all!"
"Give it a rest. They haven't even made it official yet, so don't start inventing family connections. Now, out you go!" Penny tugged at Griffin's sleeve, trying to drag him out of the car.
"Oh, really? Why don't you say that right to Tobias's face?" Griffin shot back, refusing to let go of the car's ceiling handle, like he was glued to it.
"Tobias is pure jealousy in human form. Why would I even bother talking to him about this? Seriously, quit with the drama and just get out of the car," Penny said, rolling her eyes.
Penny kept tugging and pulling, but Griffin wouldn't budge. She finally threw Kaia a helpless glare, totally exasperated.
"Kaia, can you believe this guy?" Penny complained.
"Just let him be," Kaia replied, totally unfazed.
"Thanks, Kaia!" Griffin blurted out, literally beaming.
Kaia turned and gave him a sharp look. "Quit calling me that."
"See?" Penny huffed, arms crossed and burning with irritation.
Griffin ignored Penny, flashing Kaia another mischievous grin. "Alright, alright. I'll keep my mouth zipped—unless you want me to say it!"
Kaia stared at him, speechless.
"You know, I've figured out the Moreno men are all seriously thick-skinned!" Kaia said, shaking her head.
"I'll give you that," Griffin said, nodding. "But there's something even more legendary about the Moreno men."
"What's that?" Penny asked, her curiosity obvious.
Kaia leaned in, interested too.
"Every guy in our family gets jealous way too easily, and we're all totally scared of our wives!" Griffin announced, sounding way too proud of it.
