Kaia and Penny were speechless.
"Seriously? Is this really something to brag about?" Penny snarked.
"Absolutely! Listen, harmony at home all depends on the guy. If a man doesn't value his wife, the whole family falls apart. But if he spoils her rotten, you can bet the home stays peaceful. That's been my family motto for generations," Griffin said.
Even though Penny was left speechless, deep down she had to admit Griffin had a point.
Half an hour later, they arrived at the institute.
Kaia had taken a few steps when she turned back to see Penny and Griffin still standing in place.
"Aren't you guys coming in? What are you doing, just standing there like statues?" she asked.
"No, Kaia, you don't get it. Stepping into a place like this is basically a sacred ritual for me. I need to show respect, or it's just not right," Penny said, putting her hands together like she was praying.
She finished with an "Amen."
Kaia's lips twitched. "This is a research institute, not a church."
"Kaia, Penny's right. We need to show some respect," Griffin said, putting on a totally solemn face, clasping his hands and bowing deeply—once, twice, three times.
Kaia's lips twitched again. 'Should I bow back?' she wondered.
"Look, if you guys aren't coming in, I'm heading in without you," she said.
"Alright, alright, we're coming. Wait up!" Penny called out.
Soon enough, Penny and Griffin stepped into the legendary institute—like country folk hitting the big city for the first time, gawking nonstop and wide-eyed at everything around them.
"Holy crap! Is that the brand-new top-tier equipment? Stuff this rare is worth a fortune! I can't believe there are so many here!" Griffin shouted, practically lunging at the machines in pure excitement.
Penny caught sight of a few of the senior professors buried in their work, and she went starry-eyed in an instant.
"Wait—isn't that Duncan, the Physical Science Award genius? And there's William Spencer, winner of the International Science Award! And that guy over there is Aiden Hawkins—he's insanely talented! He's bagged tons of prizes, skipped grades left and right, and made headlines when he was just twenty," Penny said, barely containing her excitement.
Penny's voice carried through the hall, making a couple of professors glance up with open annoyance at the disturbance.
"Who's making all this noise? We're trying to work here!" one of them snapped.
Penny clapped a hand over her mouth, her face going pale. 'Oh crap, I just ticked off some of the biggest names in science!' she thought.
Duncan turned, frowning as he looked over, but the moment he spotted Kaia standing nearby, he straightened up instantly and switched to a respectful tone.
"Dr. Bennett, you're here! I've finished the task you gave me. The experiment records are on your desk," he said, his tone respectful.
"Good work," Kaia said with a nod of approval.
Duncan looked genuinely taken aback by the praise, almost stammering, "No trouble at all, Dr. Bennett. It's an honor."
"Alright then, off you go," Kaia said casually, waving him away.
"Of course, I'll get to the other tasks," Duncan replied, quickly making himself scarce.
Penny watched Duncan scramble off at Kaia's simplest command, still trying to process that a scientific heavyweight like him jumped at Kaia's beck and call. Even knowing Kaia was Dr. Bennett, she still couldn't get used to just how badass Kaia really was.
On the way to Kaia's office, basically every big-shot professor they passed greeted Kaia like she was royalty. By the time they reached the office, Penny's brain had pretty much short-circuited from shock.
Penny had always seen Dr. Bennett as an absolute legend at the very top, someone she could only admire and look up to from afar. When she learned Kaia was actually Dr. Bennett, the shock and disbelief hit her hard.
But watching Kaia absolutely shine in her field, surrounded by these top-tier professors treating her with total respect, it finally sank in. Her best friend was even more insanely incredible than she'd ever thought possible.
Griffin felt the same way, except, if anything, the realization hit him even harder, especially remembering that time when Scott was kidnapped
