Jedidiah couldn't wait to step out of the café, his excitement clear.
Judith and Jameson exchanged a glance before hurrying after him.
"Mr. Swanson, wait! She's Kaia!" Judith called out.
Jedidiah stopped in his tracks and glanced back at Judith and Jameson, a flicker of surprise crossing his face. "Huh?"
Then he asked, "You two know her?"
Judith hesitated before saying, "She's the infamous black sheep of the Bennett family, the heiress they kicked out."
"That's her?" Jedidiah blinked in surprise, then the admiration in his eyes instantly doubled as he stared at Kaia.
"Everyone swears she's useless, but have you ever seen someone 'useless' ace the SAT and get into Morganburg University as the top scorer? If our family had someone like her, our ancestors would be laughing themselves silly.
"Seriously, don't hold me back! A girl as talented, beautiful, and tough as her? You'd be lucky to find someone like her in a million years. Running into her today feels like heaven sent her straight to us."
Jedidiah had already made up his mind. If Kaia ever joined his family, he'd put her on a pedestal.
As Jedidiah started walking again, Jameson quickly grabbed his arm.
"Mr. Thompson, listen to me. She's not just the Bennett family's black sheep. She's also Tobias's fiancée," Jameson said.
"What?" Jedidiah stumbled back, his eyes wide as he stared at Jameson. "She's the fiancée your grandfather picked out for Tobias?"
"That's right," Jameson confirmed.
"Oh, so it's her? That makes things a whole lot simpler." Jedidiah let out a relieved breath, patting his chest. "Didn't they set some kind of one-month deadline? Well, that month's long gone, and the engagement is ancient history. No worries."
"Yeah, the engagement's off, but... Tobias treats her like she's one in a million. He practically worships the ground she walks on," Jameson said.
Jedidiah looked totally floored.
"Wait, wasn't your nephew basically allergic to women? Rumor had it he was into guys, and now he's just putty in her hands?" Jedidiah asked, eyes wide.
"Honestly, we're just as baffled," Jameson replied.
Jedidiah stood there, stunned for a moment, then his gaze followed Kaia, who was already walking away, and quickly landed on Griffin.
"Hey, wasn't it your son who got thrown out of Morganburg all because of Kaia? Shouldn't he hate her guts right now? But why does he look like he's her loyal little sidekick?" Jedidiah blurted out.
Just then, Kaia reached out and gave Griffin a light tap on the head.
Griffin only broke into a wide smile, looking genuinely delighted.
The three of them stood there, completely dumbfounded.
"Wait, is that actually your kid? Wasn't he always the cocky, bossy one?" Jedidiah stared at Griffin like he barely recognized him.
Even Jameson and Judith were looking at each other, feeling like Griffin was suddenly a total stranger.
"Honestly... that's just not our son anymore. Let's go, no point sticking around," Judith said, shaking her head.
Inside the restaurant, Kaia was having her meal when the entrance suddenly erupted into noise.
"Hey, you filthy little beggar! Do you have any idea where you are? This is a five-star hotel! You think it's just okay to beg in a place like this? Look at those pathetic rags! Scram, now! Don't mess with our business. If you don't get lost, I'll throw you out myself!" The security guard barked furiously at the door.
A little boy, maybe five or six, clutched a bowl and looked heartbreakingly desperate. "Sir, please... My grandpa is really sick, almost dying. He just wants a taste of something decent before he's gone. That's why I came here. Please, even some leftovers would be enough."
"I said, get lost! Didn't you hear me?" The guard shoved the little boy aside, sending him sprawling on the floor.
Kaia's eyes flashed with fury. She rushed forward, snapping, "Hey! What are you doing?" Then she bent down and quickly helped the boy back to his feet.
