"Are you alright? Did you get hurt anywhere?" she asked, her tone softening with concern.
The boy timidly lifted his arm, showing a nasty scrape where the skin was broken and a thin trickle of blood started to ooze out.
Kaia's face instantly hardened. She gave the guard a frosty glare. "He's just a kid! Sure, you don't have to feed him, but did you really have to lay a hand on him? You can't just claim you have no compassion—looks like you might as well not have a heart at all."
The guard looked embarrassed. "Look, it's my job, Okay? I don't have a choice."
"Your job?" Kaia snapped. "Then tell me—which hotel rule says it's fine to hit a child?"
The guard stammered, "I... I..."
Griffin strode over, his tone icy. "Cut the excuses! I'm having you fired from this hotel right now."
The guard, recognizing Griffin, instantly dropped to his knees.
"Mr. Moreno, I'm sorry! Please, have mercy!" he begged.
Griffin didn't spare the guard a glance. Instead, he turned to the manager standing nearby. "Let your boss know. I'm firing this man myself."
"You don't even have to tell the boss. If you want someone gone, consider it done," the manager fawned.
The guard just dropped to the floor, totally wrecked—no job, no future.
"I'm really okay, it's just a little blood. I've been hurt way worse before." The boy held up his bowl, blinking back tears, his eyes searching Kaia's face. "My grandpa's really sick. Maybe won't make it much longer. He just wants something tasty before he... goes. Could you please give me your leftover food?"
Kaia glanced at the manager. "Tell the kitchen to make a proper feast for this kid. Send it straight to his table, put it all on me."
"Yes, yes! I'll tell the kitchen right now!" the manager said, practically falling over himself to please her.
"Thank you!" The boy was just about to drop to his knees when Kaia swiftly stopped him.
Kaia gently pulled him up, saying, "Don't kneel for just anyone."
"Okay! I'll do what you say!" the boy replied, eyes bright with determination.
Penny stepped forward, gently hooking her arm through Kaia's. "Come on, let's get back to our seats—our food's gonna get cold."
"Okay," Kaia replied.
Just then, Kaia's phone buzzed.
It was a call from Tobias.
"Have you eaten yet?" Tobias asked.
"I'm eating right now. What about you?" Kaia replied.
Tobias couldn't help but feel a little let down.
"I just finished up work and wanted to take you out for dinner," he said.
"Come join us! Penny's here, and so is your cousin," Kaia offered.
Griffin nearly dropped his fork when he heard that. He froze for a couple seconds, then glanced up at Kaia's phone, eyes filled with terror.
"You want Griffin? No problem, I'll give him the phone," Kaia said, handing it over.
Griffin stared at the phone like it was a ticking time bomb.
"Uh... Hello? Tobias, what do you need?" he stammered.
Tobias couldn't help but tease, "Looks like you've been awfully attentive lately, never leaving Kaia's side for a second."
Griffin felt a chill run down his spine, but he quickly blurted out, "Come on, I'm just making sure nobody tries to snatch your girl away. I'm watching out for you!"
"Not bad, I'll give you some credit for that," Tobias said, clearly pleased.
Just as Tobias hung up, Russell burst into the office.
"Wanna grab dinner tonight?" Russell asked.
"Nah, I'm heading over to see her," Tobias replied.
Russell's mouth twitched. 'Seriously? Does he have to flaunt his relationship right in front of me?'
"Looks like things are pretty sweet between you two now. So, tell me—what's the latest? How far have you gotten?" Russell pressed.
"We held hands," Tobias replied, sounding ridiculously proud.
"For real? Dude, after all that, you only held hands? Tobias, if you keep going at this pace, you'll still be single when pigs fly!" Russell snarked.
