Russell was exasperated. "Look, Kaia's amazing. She's got so many admirers, probably even more than you do. If you keep dragging your feet, someone else might just swoop in and steal her away."
He leaned in, lowering his voice. "And don't even get me started on Abdullah. He's coming back soon. You know him—you guys basically grew up joined at the hip.
"Sure, he's got a totally different personality, bit of a goofball, but when it comes to taste, you two are basically twins. Plus, he's ridiculously good-looking, sweet as hell, and knows just how to sweet-talk people. What if he comes back and sets his sights on Kaia?"
Tobias's grip on his pen tightened instinctively.
Tobias said, "Kaia wouldn't go for someone like that."
Russell grinned, teasing, "You really think so? Sure, Kaia's pretty chill, a lot like you, but they say opposites attract, right? Who knows, maybe she's just into someone like Abdullah. You'd be surprised."
There was a sharp snap as Tobias's pen broke in his hand.
Russell suddenly cut himself off, clearing his throat. "Anyway, since you've spent so much time with Kaia and you're always around her, I still think you've got the upper hand. Listen, I've got an idea that could help you win her over tonight for sure."
Tobias's face relaxed a little.
"What kind of idea?" Tobias asked.
Russell leaned in with a wicked grin. "Hear me out. Let's pull out the heartthrob card and go all out. Invite Kaia over for a swim at your private villa tonight. You've got that killer pool, right? Then, just lose the shirt, play the sexy card, and serve yourself up—see if she can resist!"
The idea sounded so wild that Russell nearly laughed, but when he glanced at Tobias, he found his friend frowning so hard that his brows were practically tangled together.
"What's up? You don't like it? Seriously, I think it's a great plan," Russell said.
Tobias pressed his lips together. "Just made me think of something Kaia once told me."
"Oh? What was it?" Russell asked.
"When we got our marriage license, I told her we shouldn't get involved in each other's lives, and not to bother trying to seduce me or anything. And she fired right back, saying even if I was stark naked, she wouldn't spare me a single glance," Tobias said.
Russell was stunned into silence for a moment.
"Seriously, dude, that's on you. If you hadn't acted like such a jerk, you'd probably have Kaia falling for you by now," Russell muttered.
"Oh, please. Like you were any better? I remember you talking way worse about her than I ever did," Tobias shot back.
Russell opened his mouth, but just thinking of all the trash he'd talked about Kaia in the past made him feel so dumb he wanted to slap himself.

That evening, Kaia found herself in Tobias's car, heading to his private villa.
"So, what's this big surprise?" she asked, curiosity piqued.
Half an hour earlier, Tobias had suddenly whisked her away, promising to take her somewhere special and show her something amazing.
"You'll see when we get inside," Tobias said, his voice full of mystery as he got out of the car and opened the door for her.
Kaia walked in, feeling a bit uncertain about what was going on.
But the moment she stepped inside, she was absolutely floored—there were roses floating all over the swimming pool. She was totally speechless.
"Wait, this is your surprise?" Kaia blurted out, half laughing and half in disbelief.
"Last time we went to the beach, you seemed to love swimming, so I set this up especially for you," Tobias said, sounding proud of himself.
Of course, none of this was Tobias's idea. It was all Russell's suggestion.
Kaia crouched by the pool, reached in, and scooped up a fat handful of rose petals. 'Is this for real?' she thought.
"For a pool this size, how many roses did you even use?" Kaia couldn't help asking, half in shock.
"Eh, not that much—just wiped out every flower shop on ten blocks," Tobias replied, grinning like he'd just pulled off some grand scheme.
Kaia stared, totally at a loss for words.
"Come on, don't just stand there. I got a swimsuit ready for you, so go change," Tobias said, urging her on.
When Kaia still didn't budge, Tobias gently shoved her toward the changing room.
"Relax, all the swimsuits I picked are perfectly normal," he said, trying his best to sound casual.
Kaia let herself get ushered inside, but the second she walked in, she stopped dead in her tracks.
