At that moment, Kaia's eyes widened with sudden fury. She could feel anger boiling over inside her.
"You're lying to me?' Kaia said. Her voice held not a trace of warmth.
Tobias couldn't help the panic rising inside him as he saw Kaia this way.
"I just wanted to give you a surprise," Tobias said quickly.
Kaia clenched her fists at her sides, her chest heaving with anger. After a tense pause, she shoved Tobias aside with all her strength.
"Nothing pisses me off more than being lied to," Kaia said, her voice ice-cold.
"I'm sorry. I..." Tobias started.
"Enough. I don't want to hear your lame excuses. Maybe messing with me is your idea of fun, but honestly? It's just pathetic," Kaia snapped.
She got out of bed, straightened her clothes, and walked out of the room—not once looking back.
"Kaia!" Tobias called out, his breath coming fast as he rushed after her, grabbing her around the waist and stopping her abruptly.
"I know I was being childish. I never should've tried to get your attention in such a stupid way. Looking back, it's not me at all. Honestly, I can't even explain why I acted so immature. Maybe... falling in love really does lower your intelligence," Tobias confessed, frustration and regret mixing in his voice.
"Let go," Kaia said, her face cold and emotionless.
Tobias only held her tighter, refusing to release his grip.
"If I were in your shoes, I'd be furious too. There's no excuse for what I did. But hey, isn't there a saying that admitting your mistakes is half the battle? I'm sorry, Kaia. Please, just give me one more chance. I swear I'll never pull something like this again," Tobias pleaded.
Kaia was too angry to deal with this right now. All she wanted was some space.
"This is the last time I'm saying this: let go, or let's never see each other again," Kaia said, her voice sharp and unwavering.
Tobias felt a stabbing pain in his chest, his blood seemed to freeze and it was hard to even breathe. 'So this is what heartbreak feels like?' he thought, a wave of loss washing over him.
"I'm counting to three. One!" Kaia said, her voice cold and unyielding.
As soon as she spoke, Tobias let go. He didn't dare to push his luck.
Without sparing him a glance, Kaia walked out, leaving Tobias standing there alone.
Tobias stared after her, feeling an emptiness he couldn't even put into words. 'Is this what heartbreak really feels like?' he wondered, a dull ache settling in his chest as Kaia's figure disappeared down the hall.
Just then, his phone started buzzing. It was Russell calling.
As soon as he answered, Russell's non-stop rapid-fire chatter blasted through the line.
"Tobias! So, how did it go? Did you get the girl or what? Told you I was right, huh? Once you get her in bed, the heart follows—easy! Don't you think you should thank your number-one wingman? Maybe send me a huge gift for hooking you up?" Russell laughed.
Russell had been rambling nonstop, but suddenly he realized Tobias had gone completely silent on the other end.
"Tobias? What's up? Why aren't you saying anything?" Russell asked, a little confused.
"Hello? Can you even hear me?" Russell pressed, sounding impatient.
"Tobias..." Russell started again, trying to get his attention.
"I just got dumped," Tobias said, sounding utterly crushed. Russell instantly choked back everything he was about to say.
It took Russell a long moment to find his voice again.
"Got dumped? Kaia didn't even agree to date you," Russell said, trying to keep things light.
But right after he said that, he felt a chill come through the phone.
"Uh, just kidding! All jokes aside. Seriously, what actually happened? Did you use the tricks I told you about? It shouldn't have gone sideways like this. How did you two end up falling out?" Russell asked, sounding genuinely concerned.
Tobias let out a shaky breath, his whole expression clouded with turmoil.
"Hold on, I'm coming right over," Russell said, then hung up and hurried straight to Tobias's place.
