Meanwhile, Kaia was already done talking with her blind date. It was going nowhere. But Gloria and Sullivan thought her attitude meant she was trying to negotiate terms.
"Alright. My son's grown up. There's nothing I can do about it!" Gloria grumbled, shooting Sullivan a look before addressing Kaia. "See? He's already doting on you, and you're not even married yet. Alright, you don't have to tend the garden anymore. Just cook three meals a day, and in your free time, take care of the vegetable patch."
"Is that good enough for you? Since you are, let's set a date. I already picked one. Next month's first week is very nice," Gloria declared.
"So soon?" Daisy blinked in surprise. "But... they just met. Shouldn't they spend some time getting to know each other first?"
"Why bother? They can get to know each other after marriage!" Gloria decided firmly.
Daisy frowned. "But Kaia's still in college, and she's doing great. She's even the top scorer on this year's SAT."
Gloria replied, "What's the point of studying? Even after graduation, how much could she earn a month? I say she should stop studying and come to our house instead. We'll feed and clothe her."
"But..." Daisy was getting more and more uneasy by the minute.
Kaia smiled politely. "Aunt Daisy, this family's honestly pretty great. Don't you have a daughter? Why don't you introduce her instead? As for me, I'll pass. I already have a boy... a fiancé."
She almost blurted out "boyfriend," but figured calling him her "fiancé" would squash any more matchmaking attempts right away.
"Fiancé? You have a fiancé? What's going on, Daisy? Where did this fiancé suddenly come from?" Gloria raised her voice.
Daisy explained, "Oh, she's just making that up. I've heard her mother mention something about a fiancé before. But she never leaves the house and believes whatever her daughter says. Kids these days always make up fake boyfriends or fiancés to get out of blind dates."
Once Daisy said that, she noticed Gloria finally looked relaxed, and Sullivan breathed a massive sigh of relief too.
"Who says I don't have a fiancé?" Kaia shot back, rising to her feet.
Daisy tugged on Kaia's arm. "Kaia, quit fooling around. Since when did you get a fiancé? Sit down and let's talk for real."
"I really do!" Kaia insisted, not backing down for a second.
"Oh? If you really have a fiancé, then where is he? Call him over right now!" Gloria retorted.
The moment Daisy said that, a deep, magnetic male voice came from behind them. "Sorry, Kaia. I'm late."
Kaia's heart gave a loud thump. That voice… that familiar presence… stirred something indescribable inside her.
She slowly turned her head, and Tobias's strikingly handsome face came into view.
'It's been a long time...' Kaia thought.
Tobias couldn't take his eyes off her. He thought she looked thinner after these few days apart. He wondered if he was somehow to blame for this. 'Man, I'm an asshole,' he cursed himself.
The two of them were both breathtakingly attractive. Standing together, they looked like a couple painted straight out of a masterpiece.
But just as the moment felt perfect, an out-of-place voice pierced the scene.
"Kaia, is he... is he really your fiancé?" Daisy blurted out in disbelief.
Before Kaia could respond, Tobias had already slipped his arm around her waist, holding her close.
"We had our engagement a while ago," Tobias replied.
Kaia lifted an eyebrow, staying cool. His words weren't exactly a lie, but they were skillfully phrased.
"You two are putting on an act! Kaia, how could you pull something like this? Be real. How much did you pay this guy to play your fiancé?" Daisy blurted out.
