"Alright," he said.
He immediately crouched in front of her to make it easier for her to check.
Kaia was taken by surprise when Tobias crouched down in front of her, and for some reason, her heart did a weird little flip.
That strange feeling just hung there, and she couldn't shake it off.
She reached over and ran her fingers across his head. That bump was definitely still there, and it was pretty huge.
"It's still so swollen. You didn't put any medicine on it?" Kaia asked.
"You gave me this bump. How could I want it gone so soon?" Tobias replied.
"You're seriously nuts." Kaia gave him an exasperated eye-roll.
Tobias replied, "Yeah, I'm going insane, especially these past few days when you weren't around. I couldn't eat, couldn't sleep. No matter how much work I buried myself in, I still couldn't forget you. You're the Dr. Miracle. Tell me, what kind of sickness is this?"
Tobias gazed at her intently, his eyes soft and deep, as though petals were blooming in them, wrapping her up entirely.
Kaia saw her own face reflected in his eyes clearly, like she was branded in his very bones. She'd always thought her heart was calm as still water, but now, ripples just kept spreading and wouldn't stop.
After a long silence, she finally came back to herself.
"This could be nothing, or it could be serious. Let's stop by the hospital for a quick check later," Kaia said.
"Alright," he said.
"Let me rub it for you," Kaia offered.
"Yeah," Tobias nodded.
Tobias leaned in even closer, offering his head so she could massage him. Honestly, he just wanted to soak up every bit of her sweetness and warmth.
Griffin caught the whole scene in the rearview mirror. He felt like he was watching his cousin act like a literal lapdog. 'Man, I'm getting hit with a full dose of couple energy here,' Griffin thought.
"Tobias, if you two want to get all lovey-dovey, can you at least wait until you're home? I'm still here, you know," Griffin grumbled.
Tobias squinted at him. "Who told you to get in the car?"
Speechless, Griffin thought, 'Who else was going to drive you, genius?'
"Wait, why's he here?" Kaia suddenly noticed, catching on a bit late.
Griffin was lost for words again. He thought, 'Great, guess I'm just the extra wheel here.'
He said, "Whatever, just keep flirting. Just pretend this car drives itself."
And, sure enough, Tobias and Kaia acted like he didn't even exist.
"Am I pressing too hard?" Kaia asked.
"Kind of hurts—could you go a bit lighter?" Tobias said.
"Alright," she said.
Griffin kept his mouth shut, but then a mischievous grin crept onto his face. Out of nowhere, he swung the steering wheel sharply to one side.
The tires squealed on the road, and Kaia, caught off guard by the jolt, ended up crashing straight into Tobias.
Tobias reacted instantly, grabbing Kaia and pulling her firmly into his arms.
"Whoa! Did you see that? A cat just bolted across the street. Good thing I've got mad driving skills, or things could've gotten messy," Griffin said.
Griffin glanced back and caught Tobias with Kaia in his arms. He thought, 'Perfect. When they get married, I'm definitely asking for a reward.'
"Watch it," Tobias said, giving Griffin a smug nod in the rearview mirror.
Meanwhile, Kaia's face was pressed against his chest, his large hand cradling the back of her head. She could hear his strong, steady heartbeat clearly.
"You can let go now," Kaia said.
"Okay," Tobias replied, but he didn't move his arms at all.
"If you keep hugging me any tighter, I'm not gonna be able to breathe," Kaia complained.
Hearing that, Tobias reluctantly let go.
Just then, the car suddenly lurched to the side again, tires screeching.
