This time, the car lurched in the opposite direction, sending Tobias toppling forward, right on top of Kaia. Instinctively, his hand slid behind her head to cushion it before she hit the seat.
"Whoa! That cat's back again!" Griffin called out, totally over the top.
Tobias glanced up, gave a satisfied nod toward the rearview mirror, and reminded in a gentle tone, "Drive slowly. Be careful."
"Got it. I'll be extra careful this time," Griffin replied, trying not to laugh.
Lying beneath him, Kaia couldn't help but twitch the corner of her mouth.
Before long, they arrived at the hospital.
Kaia took it upon herself to examine Tobias. "Fortunately, it's nothing serious. But you should still take care of yourself. To avoid any lingering effects, I recommend you have a massage therapist work on your head every day."
"With you around, why would I need anyone else?" Tobias said with a faint smile.
"I've got classes, a job... Where am I supposed to find all that time for you?" Kaia huffed.
"If you won't help me, then I won't let anyone else do it either." Tobias declared, stubbornly.
She frowned. "You're being childish again, aren't you?"
"This isn't childish," he said, his gaze locking onto hers, voice low and earnest. "A man's head can't just be touched by anyone. Once it's touched, that person has to take responsibility for life."
Whenever Tobias looked at her like that, Kaia felt like she was completely under his spell.
"Fine, you can come over every night," she shot back.
The next thing she knew, Tobias had scooped her up in his arms and spun her around in sheer delight.
"I knew it! You're always the sweetest to me. You can't bear to see me go through anything rough," Tobias said with that teasing, honeyed tone.
Kaia's face went red as a tomato. "Put me down already! People are watching!"
"Let them watch. I don't care," Tobias replied.
Kaia glared at him. Under her gaze, Tobias finally surrendered.
"Alright," he said.
Kaia figured he was about to let her go, but instead, Tobias carried her straight into a quiet, secluded corner.
"Now nobody's watching," he said.
Kaia could only stare, lost for words.
Seeing her cheeks flushing, Tobias couldn't help himself. He lowered his hand and softly touched her forehead, the lightest of taps.
Kaia's heart thundered in her chest, her blush growing even deeper, creeping down her neck and behind her ears.
To Tobias, she looked like a ripe fruit hanging within reach, tempting, irresistible after days of hunger.
He swallowed hard, desire pulsing through him, flooding his veins until it hit his brain like fire.
He leaned in, ready to claim that tempting, ripe prize.
For once, Kaia didn't push him away. She simply stared as his face drew closer. And then, she closed her eyes.
That simple gesture sent Tobias reeling. Every cell in his body seemed to roar, his blood pumping so loudly he could hear it in his ears.
He felt like he was going insane. He had to taste her.
Then, the sudden buzz of a phone shattered the charged atmosphere.
Tobias's brows drew together in a deep frown. "Ignore it."
But the phone just wouldn't quit, and Kaia finally snapped out of her daze, pushing him away.
"It's my mom," she said.
Tobias pressed his lips together, giving her a seriously wounded look.
Kaia let out a helpless laugh and picked up the call.
"Hi Mom, why are you calling?" she asked.
