Inside their car, Kaia glanced up at the rearview mirror.
"Did you see that car behind us? It's been following for a while," she said.
Tobias glanced back. "You think it's the ones from the hospital?"
"Most likely." Kaia shrugged.
Without hesitation, Tobias grabbed his phone and dialed a number.
Minutes later, more cars suddenly appeared behind them.
"Looks like their crew," Kaia said, keeping her cool. At that moment, one of the cars accelerated, cut in front, and blocked them. In an instant, their car was boxed in from the front and back.
Kaia and Tobias swung their car doors open, quickly sizing up their surroundings.
Roughly twenty men stood around, all masked and armed. Judging by the looks, these guys were straight-up outlaws.
"Who sent you?" Kaia asked, her voice cool and steady.
"Well, aren't you something. Still keeping your cool? Bet you're wetting yourself right now, sweetheart. Don't worry, we will take good care of you. We'll make you scream with pleasure until you die." The leader laughed lecherously.
The others were just as filthy, checking Kaia out up and down, every gaze full of sleazy intent.
Tobias's eyes narrowed, his gaze cold as steel.
"You're asking for it." Tobias lunged forward in a single step and kicked the leader hard, sending him crashing against a tree.
The leader hacked out blood, choking and sputtering. Nobody could doubt the raw power behind Tobias's kick.
Kaia frowned at Tobias. "You're still recovering. You shouldn't have put yourself at risk."
"You're my woman. How can I allow anyone to insult you?" Tobias's voice chilled to the bone.
Kaia could sense his anger, a kind of furious anger she'd never witnessed in him before. She felt her heart grow tender and warm for him.
"What the hell are you standing there for? Break his damn legs! Keep him alive so I can destroy his woman in front of him!" the leader snapped.
That was the last straw for Tobias. He didn't care about his own injury, didn't care what weapons they had. Ice-cold fury drove him forward. He tore through the goons blocking him. He was unstoppable.
Kaia stood quietly, watching Tobias go full beast mode, unstoppable against all odds. She smiled and charged in as well. She and Tobias fought side by side against the thugs.
All those thugs were armed, and even for Kaia and Tobias, taking them all down wasn't going to be easy.
Luckily, Devin and his crew arrived at just the right moment and knocked down the thugs.
Devin glared down at the leader, who was being crushed into the dirt. "Speak! Who hired you? Who dares attack the Moreno family head?"
The leader went pale, terror instantly flooding his whole face. He stared up at Tobias not with anger anymore, but with sheer fear.
He said, "I didn't know he was the Moreno family head! If I had known, I wouldn't have dared, no matter how brave I am!"
Kaia watched him sobbing and shaking. He really didn't seem like he was lying. After thinking for two seconds, she asked coolly, "So, I'm the target here, aren't I?"
The leader hesitated, then finally blurted out, "Sorry, Miss Bennett. We've got nothing personal against you. Someone paid us, that's all. Please, go easy on us. Don't hold it against us!"
"Who hired you? Who sent you?" Tobias asked coldly.
"This... this... this is against the rules. I..." the leader blurted out, but before he could finish, Tobias kicked him square in the face.
