The leader was grimacing in pain, blood foaming at his mouth as he tried to speak.
Tobias said coldly, "If you won't talk, that's fine. Devin, take him to Uflen to work the mines. He's never to return. And make sure he gets the hardest ground to dig."
"No, please! I'll talk, I'll talk!" the leader blurted out, terrified. "It was the Smith family! Finley Smith!"
"Finley?" Kaia was genuinely taken aback, but after a moment's thought, it actually all added up.
"Who is he? Did something happen between you two?" Tobias asked, frowning in confusion.
Kaia told him everything that had gone down in the last few days.
She said, "He must've held a serious grudge and gone out of his way to get revenge. I didn't expect that the head of the prestigious Smith family could be so ruthless and poisonous."
"So, what are you going to do about it?" Tobias asked.
He only asked because he knew Kaia and Claire were close. Otherwise, he would've sent Finley straight to hell and crushed the Smith family for good.
"About this..." Kaia frowned. "I didn't want to tell Claire at first, but since I see her as a friend, I shouldn't keep it from her."
So Kaia called Claire and told her everything that had just happened.
For a long moment, there was only silence from Claire's side.
Kaia prompted. "Hello? Claire, are you..."
"Kaia, I'm so sorry! This is all my fault. I nearly dragged you into this," Claire sobbed, her voice shaky with tears.
"This has nothing to do with you. Don't blame yourself," Kaia reassured her.
Claire took a deep breath, and suddenly a newfound determination lit up her eyes.
She said, "Ever since my mom left, my dad showed his true colors. He never cared about me at all. He threw me out onto the streets, tried to marry me off to some old man just for the company's benefit. When I refused, he locked me up and let his daughter from another woman bully and beat me."
She continued, "A man like that doesn't deserve to be called my father. The Smith family is not home to me anymore. So, whether it's Finley or the Smith family, none of them have anything to do with me now."
There was calm relief in her smile as she spoke. "In my heart, you're more important than they'll ever be. So, please don't go easy on them because of me. They were despicable scumbags. If you let them go today, they'll stab you in the back tomorrow."
"Alright," Kaia said, feeling a genuine wave of happiness. She could tell Claire had finally let it all go for real.
It was just like when she'd broken free from the Bennett family. The last bit of baggage in her heart had finally disappeared.
"Congrats, Claire," Kaia said with a gentle smile.
Claire caught Kaia's meaning right away. "I know it's a little late, but congrats to you too, Kaia."
The two of them laughed together, feeling lighter than ever.

Meanwhile, at the Smith family residence. The whole Smith family sat on the couch, eagerly waiting for the good news to roll in.
"Strange. Why is it taking so long? Dad, call them and check." Presley said impatiently. Every time she thought about how Kaia had beaten her, rage flared up again. She wanted to tear her apart.
Finley took a sip of water calmly. "Don't worry. The people I hired are all desperados, strong and ruthless. If they haven't reported back, they're probably… busy tormenting Kaia right now."
"Good! That's perfect!" Presley grinned as she imagined Kaia being brutalized by those thugs. The thought alone made her ecstatic.
