Just as she was about to call Joel, her phone buzzed. It was Tobias.
"Are you home right now?" Tobias asked.
"Just got back," Kaia replied.
"Sorry I had to work late and couldn't come get you," Tobias apologized.
"Come on, it's not like you're my personal chauffeur. Why are you apologizing?" Kaia teased, a smile in her voice.
"But I am," Tobias answered, his velvet voice dripping with affection. "I'm your personal driver."
For a split second, Kaia was too dumbfounded to speak.
"Alright, enough with that. Since you're coming over, could you bring some clothes for a boy?" Kaia shut Tobias down and requested.
Tobias's tone suddenly turned frigid. "A boy? Wait, you brought some guy home? And you actually want me to grab him clothes? Kaia, I can spoil you endlessly and put up with almost anything, but I'll never give in for these kinds of things."
"What are you talking about? He's just a kid," Kaia replied exasperatedly as she raised her hand to rub at her temples.
"You do have a thing for younger boys, huh?" Tobias shot back, his voice even colder.
Kaia couldn't help but roll her eyes and twitch her lips in annoyance, then flipped her phone to Vince, making sure Tobias got a good look at the kid on camera.
"See for yourself. He's literally six years old!" Kaia shot back, fed up.
"Six, huh? That's hardly a toddler," Tobias grumbled.
Kaia decisively hung up with a long beep before Tobias could say another word.
Just then, her phone buzzed with a message from Tobias.
[I'm on my way,] the text read.
Another message popped up right after, [I'll bring clothes.]
Kaia couldn't help but chuckle, a trace of exasperation in her voice.
It wasn't long before Tobias rushed right over.
As soon as he stepped inside, his attention instantly zeroed in on Vince.
"He's just a kid! Keep this up, and I'll kick you out myself," Kaia shot back, warning Tobias directly.
Tobias passed the clothes to Vince, grinning. "Don't overthink it. I just see the kid as a little brother."
Kaia snorted. "Yeah, right."
She'd seen just how shameless men could be, more times than she'd care to admit.
"Vince, can you manage a bath on your own? Need me to help you out?" Kaia asked, giving Tobias a gentle look.
Tobias's face immediately darkened. "He's a kid, sure, but boys and girls are different. He'd probably get embarrassed. Let me handle it instead."
"You're seriously volunteering to help him shower?" Kaia sputtered, staring at Tobias in disbelief.
It was hard for Kaia to believe that she had heard that right. Tobias was known to be a clean freak who could not stand messes. The fact that he wanted to help bathe a kid he had just met was too absurd for Kaia.
'If his mom found out, she'd probably freak out so hard she'd get a heart attack,' Kaia mused, biting back a laugh at the thought.
"No, no, that's okay! I can do it myself. I always wash up on my own!" Vince insisted, clutching the clothes to his chest.
"Uh, Kaia, where do I go to shower?" Vince asked, glancing around nervously.
"There are bathrooms both downstairs and upstairs. Pick whichever you like," Kaia said, pointing in the rough direction.
"Okay, I'll be quick!" Vince replied, then hurried off to clean up.
About twenty minutes later, Vince came out of the bathroom.
"Wait a sec..." Tobias muttered, a puzzled look on his face.
Kaia tilted her head, curious. "What's up?"
Tobias stared intently at Vince. "It's nothing. It's just...I swear I've seen this kid somewhere before."
"Have you two met before?" Kaia asked again.
"I don't think so...but why does he seem so familiar?" Tobias mumbled, wracking his brains but still coming up empty.
Kaia turned to Vince. "Do you remember ever meeting him?"
Vince shook his head. "Nope! If I'd ever met a big brother as handsome as him, I'd definitely remember!"
Tobias looked smugly satisfied. Especially since Vince had just praised him right in front of Kaia.
Just then, Tobias's phone rang.
Tobias shot a look at the caller ID and rubbed his temples, already feeling a headache coming on.
"That punk's definitely back," Tobias grumbled under his breath.
