"Congratulations," Tobias said with a faint smile.
"Not yet! She and I haven't even started. But she's agreed to take me in—as her student. Every Saturday, I'll be going over to learn from her. With proximity and persistence, how could I not win her heart?" Abdullah joked, without an inch of arrogance in his tone.
"Then I wish you success," Tobias said sincerely, but pursued further with his questioning. "By the way, you think someone like her is single? Did you ask if she has a boyfriend?"
"Nope," Abdullah replied, shrugging. "As long as she's not married, she's fair game. I'm not the type to break up a family—but if she's unattached, boyfriend or not, it's still a competition of skill."
Tobias paused, then gave a small, rueful laugh. "That's… a solid argument." What Abdullah said resonated with him; he couldn't agree more.
By Friday, the excitement in the classroom was palpable. The students were abuzz—not about assignments or tasks, but stocks.
"Kaia, did you hear?" Penny leaned across the desk, phone in hand. "The class monitor made a fortune trading stocks! Everyone's getting into it. You should try too!"
Kaia looked up from her book, her expression unreadable. "If you really want to buy," she said lightly, "I'd suggest K&B or tech stocks."
Penny blinked. She had only been making small talk, but Kaia's confident tone caught her off guard. After all, Kaia owned K&B.
"Why those two, specifically?" Penny asked, curiosity piqued.
Before Kaia could answer, a snide voice chimed in from nearby.
"Don't listen to her rambling. What does she know about stocks?" Henry sneered.
Henry had a thing for Lailah. And he would perpetually run his mouth to diss Kaia in front of everyone, to impress Lailah.
Kaia looked up, her gaze cool and sharp. "Whether I know or not—what's it to you? Can't you keep your mouth shut for once?"
"Good one!" Penny couldn't help but cheer beside her.
Henry's face turned purple. Then, noticing Lailah entering the classroom, he straightened, determined to put on a show by raising his voice even further.
"Kaia, just because you got into Morganburg University as the SAT top scorer doesn't mean you're some big deal," Henry scoffed loudly, such that everyone could hear him clearly.
Kaia's voice was calm, almost lazy. "I don't know if I'm a big deal. But I do know those who didn't make it in first place should probably keep their mouths shut."
Laughter rippled through the room as Kaia's voice dropped.
Henry's cheeks flushed crimson. "You just said K&B and tech stocks are worth buying? I checked—no value at all! Let's bet. If you're wrong, you'll apologize to me and to Lailah. If you win, I'll apologize to you. Deal?"
Before Kaia could answer, Lailah strode right forward—her hand cracking across Zhu Heng's cheek with a sound that stunned the room into silence.
"You pick a fight with her, fine," Lailah snapped, voice trembling with anger while glaring at Henry. "But why drag me into it?"
The classroom went dead silent. Henry stood there, clutching his face, totally stunned by what Lailah had just done.
"I was just trying to defend you!" Henry sputtered, clutching his cheek. "How can you forgive her just like that, after everything she did to you—"
"To me?" Lailah's voice trembled with anger. "I brought that to myself. She didn't wrong me—I wronged her. Her words woke me up. If not for her, I'd still be wasting my college years. She's not just a classmate—she's definitely my mentor."
A collective gasp swept through the class. Even Penny, who knew the real story, was left speechless by what she had witnessed. Then, before anyone could react, Lailah bowed deeply to Kaia.
After giving Kaia one last grateful look, Lailah turned to Henry and said coldly, "Stay away from me, Henry. We're done."
With that, Lailah walked past him, calm and resolute, taking a seat behind Kaia as if nothing had happened.
Henry stood frozen, humiliation searing his face, while laughter and whispers rippled around him. Rage boiled in his chest. His hatred for Kaia just exploded to a whole new level.
'Damn it, this is all Kaia's fault! She made me look like a total joke in front of everyone. Just wait—I'll make her pay,' Henry fumed to himself.
Kaia ignored him completely. Just as she was about to pick up her book, her phone vibrated, and she glanced at the screen—it was Horace's assistant calling.
"Kaia, something's wrong! Horace's collapsed—he's asking for you!" the assistant blurted out as soon as the call got through.
Kaia's expression darkened. "I'll be right there."
Just as she hung up, the bell rang for class.
The bell rang just as she hung up. Jake entered, and before she could leave, Henry seized his chance and shouted, "Professor Guzman, look! She's walking out right as class starts. No respect for you at all!"
Everyone at Morganburg University knew Professor Jake Guzman's reputation—unyielding, proud, and merciless about discipline, no matter the background of the individual. No one dared to show up late, leave early, or even break the smallest rule in his lectures.
'Kaia, let's see you crash and burn this time!' Henry thought to himself, a smug grin spreading across his face.
"Kaia!" Jake snapped, clearly furious. "Return to your seat, or I'll mark you zero for this course!"
Kaia turned and tried to explain, "Horace's sick. He wants to see me."
Henry's laughter rang out, "Listen to her, guys! She claims Horace called for her! Who does she think she is—his granddaughter?"
"No," Kaia said evenly, "I'm—"
"See? She admits it! Then why would he call for her? What a ridiculous excuse. If you're trying to bail on class, at least come up with a halfway decent one. You think Professor Guzman's a fool?" Henry jeered.
Kaia's eyes turned cold. She needed to get to the hospital to see Horace, and had no time to waste.
