"Who else could it be? Kaia's always zoning out in class and skipping lessons all the time," Jake said.
"Her?" Braylon blinked, caught off guard. He hadn't expected Jake to be talking about Kaia.
"That's right, her! Don't tell me she's never missed one of your classes," Jake pressed.
"Yeah, she has, but honestly, she's insanely talented! Her computer skills blow mine out of the water. I seriously learn more from her than she could ever learn from me," Braylon said.
"You..." Jake got choked by Braylon's words. "That's totally out of line. Kaia's just a student, and you're supposed to be her professor!"
Braylon just waved it off, clearly unfazed by Jake's reaction.
"Everyone learns at their own pace, and we all have our special strengths. Age doesn't automatically make you more qualified. Look at Dr. Bennett, the top scientist in the field. Nobody has seen her in person, but everyone knows she's really young. Would you honestly try to pull seniority just because she's younger than you?" Braylon said.
"Braylon!" Jake barked, his voice burning with outrage.
"You've got some nerve, comparing Kaia, an insignificant student, to Dr. Bennett! If Dr. Bennett or anyone at her institute catches wind of this, do you have any idea what kind of mess you'll be in?" Jake spat.
The other professors and Morganburg University's higher-ups couldn't take the shouting anymore and quickly jumped in to calm things down.
"Alright, let's cool it for a minute. The new president is about to show up. Do we really need to be at each other's throats, just because of one student? As for Kaia, you two can hash it out once the new president is here. Whether she stays or goes, it'll be the new president's call," one of the higher-ups said.
Just as he wrapped up his words, Horace's assistant strode into the room.
"The new president is here. Everyone, please stand," the assistant called out.
The whole crowd was bursting with curiosity. 'Who on earth is this new president? The word is, it's one of our own, but with every big name from the university showing up today, nobody can say for sure who's landed the role,' they thought.
All eyes were on Kaia as she walked in, her presence drawing everyone's attention.
Every professor and university higher-up was stunned into silence, especially Jake and Braylon. They had never imagined that their student was the new president.
"Hello, everyone. I'm Kaia Bennett, the new president," Kaia introduced herself calmly, standing at the head of the long table.
The place went dead silent.
Everyone was completely gobsmacked, jaws nearly hitting the floor. A few folks even went as far as to secretly pinch their own legs, just to check if they weren't in some wild dream.
'Ouch.' Yep, that pain was real. It turned out this wasn't some crazy hallucination after all.
"Alright, everyone, take a seat," Kaia said, pulling out her chair and sitting down first. But when she looked around, she saw everyone else still standing there stiff as boards, like a bunch of statues.
"Seriously, are you all planning to just stand here for the whole meeting?" Kaia quipped.
Kaia's words jolted everyone out of their trance. One by one, they shuffled back into their seats, still shell-shocked and barely believing what just happened.
'How could this be? How did she end up as the new president?' Jake stared at Kaia, his mind spinning. The more he looked, the less he could wrap his head around it. It was almost impossible for him to accept.
Kaia caught Jake's weird look. "Professor Guzman, you keep staring at me. Got something you want to say?"
Jake struggled for a few seconds before finally blurting out, "Why are you the new president?"
That was exactly what everyone else was dying to ask.
"Because the former president made the call. It's not really up to me," Kaia replied.
"Huh! Listen to yourself. It sounds like you don't even want the job. Kaia, do you know what that makes you? Acting like a victim when you've lucked out big time!" Jake scoffed.
Kaia shot Jake a blank look. "You're not happy about this, are you?"
