"Do you really think you've got what it takes to make me respect you?" Jake shot back, dodging the question.
The assistant couldn't hold back anymore. "Jake! Mind your attitude. She's the president now!"
After that, the assistant swept his eyes around the room, noticing that almost everyone wore a defiant or resentful look.
"Do you all really think becoming Morganburg University's president is some casual decision? That the last president could just hand over the position to anyone, just like that?" the assistant said sternly.
The assistant pulled out an official document and placed it on the table.
"This is the official approval from the national authorities. See for yourselves," the assistant said.
Jake was the first to snatch it up. The more he read, the wider his eyes grew, especially when he spotted all those stamped seals from the government. His face was practically contorted with shock.
After seeing Jake's reaction, every other professor was itching with curiosity. As soon as he was done, they couldn't wait to get their hands on the document and started passing it around.
For a while, all they could hear in the conference room was the flurry of rustling pages and stunned gasps.
Just like the assistant said, Morganburg University wasn't just the top school in Morganburg, but it was one of the most elite universities in Wustriland. Making someone its president wasn't the call the former president could make with a snap decision.
They thought, 'If that's how it worked, then Kaia must have some truly remarkable skills to get that official approval.
They were confused. 'But still, why her? Yes, Kaia was this year's top SAT scorer, but that alone couldn't possibly be enough to land her the president's seat.'
'Does Kaia have some kind of hidden identity?' everyone wondered.
Braylon leaned in and muttered to Jake, "Still thinking about kicking Kaia out now?"
"Hmph!" Jake was so pissed his face twisted in frustration.
Braylon was barely holding back his laughter as he turned to Kaia. "Kaia—uh, I mean, Ms. Bennett, we're curious. Weren't you just a student here? Now you're suddenly our president? How did that even happen?"
Kaia swept her gaze around the room. "I know you're all curious, but I'd rather not get into the details. I've asked the former president to keep quiet about it, too."
"What's with all the secrecy, huh? People who don't know better might think you're some big deal," Jake scoffed, making it clear he wasn't happy about Kaia being the president.
"Jake! That's no way to talk to the president!" Braylon snapped, sounding genuinely ticked off.
"Well, look at that, Braylon. You always act all straight-laced, but now you're cozying up to the new boss," Jake snarked, shooting him a sideways look.
"Cozying up? You call that cozying up? Come off it. The official approval is sitting right there. If she's got the credentials, she's got the credentials," Braylon retorted.
Jake challenged. "What's she got? If she's so capable, then let her prove herself and bring some actual results! Ten years ago, Longsea University was barely on anyone's radar, but ever since they teamed up with Janson Research Institute, they've been skyrocketing and are about to leave us in the dust.
"If we keep cruising along the same old way, we'll lose our place as the most prestigious university in Morganburg! If she's truly got the skill, let her solve this crisis. If Kaia can pull it off, I'll give her my respect!"
Jake's words threw the room into complete silence.
No one could deny that Morganburg University was on the verge of losing its crown.
Kaia shot the assistant a confused look. "Janson Research Institute? I've never even heard of that place."
"Ms. Bennett, Janson Research Institute is actually the number four research institute in all of Wustriland," the assistant replied.
Jake rolled his eyes hard enough to pull a muscle. "For real? Even kids know about Janson Research Institute, and you're clueless? With that level of experience, you honestly think you're fit to run Morganburg University? Lead us to greatness?
"That's a joke. Forget making us shine. Just getting us out of this rut would be wishful thinking. Honestly, I'm betting you'll tank the whole university, not just put us in a slump."
