One professor beamed. "With today's announcement, plus the research competition, if any students actually get accepted into Dr. Bennett's institute, our enrollment at Morganburg University is going to explode next year!
"Earlier, I thought you were ignorant just because you hadn't heard about Janson Research Institute. Man, I'm such a fool. It's not that you lack insight, but that you operate on a completely different level. Anything that's not in the top three doesn't even get noticed by you!"
As the nonstop compliments echoed around him, Jake's face flushed redder and redder, almost turning purple with all that embarrassment.
Braylon gave him a smug look from the side. He had planned on teasing him a bit more, but seeing Jake's ghastly pale face, he figured he'd better hold off. Otherwise, Jake might just keel over on the spot.
The assistant stood proudly by Kaia's side, sneaking glances at Kaia whenever he could. He thought, 'If these people had any idea that the woman right in front of them is actually Dr. Bennett, the legend they're always worshipping, they'd be even more blown away. Hell, they'd probably be tripping over themselves to suck up even harder.'
Just then, one of the Morganburg University higher-ups finally voiced the question everyone was dying to ask.
He spelled out, "Ms. Bennett, we're all really curious. What's your connection to Dr. Bennett's research institute?"
The moment the question was out, the whole room went dead silent. Every single pair of eyes snapped back to Kaia.
Kaia swept her gaze around the room, her voice calm and steady. "I'd rather not say."
Everyone was disappointed, but if she didn't want to talk about it, there had to be a reason.
"Let's call it a day. If there's nothing else, this meeting is adjourned," Kaia said as she rose to her feet.
The meeting was over. Everyone waited for Kaia to leave first before they stood up and filed out of the room, one after another.
Jake kept his head down, wishing he could just disappear right there.
At that moment, two professors walked past him, talking to each other quietly.
One of them whispered, "I have a crazy idea. Dr. Bennett is pretty young, right? And she's also a woman. Do you think Kaia is actually Dr. Bennett?"
Jake's heart nearly stopped. He froze, staring wide-eyed at the professor who spoke, feeling like his whole body had turned to ice.
"What are you even thinking?" the other professor muttered. "Dr. Bennett is an icon in Wustriland's scientific world. No way she'd ever come here and become our president. She's probably buried in her research 24/7."
"Yeah, you've got a point," the first professor conceded.
The other professor added, "And, don't forget Ms. Bennett's just a regular student in the computer science department. You really think Dr. Bennett would come here to be a student? Studying computer science, of all things?"
"Fair enough. Guess my imagination just got the better of me," the first professor said, shaking his head.
Jake let out a slow breath, finally feeling relieved.
The other professor continued, "Of course, it makes sense. Bennett is royalty and super important to Wustriland. Whenever she leaves the house, she's got Joel, the king of boxing, escorting her himself. Like, have you ever seen Joel hanging around our campus?"
The first professor smiled awkwardly. "Heh, I know, totally embarrassing. Just promise me you won't spill my wild theory to anyone, okay?"
Jake's heart finally settled. He chuckled and shook his head. 'Wow, he's really letting his imagination run wild there,' he thought.
Just then, a security guard accidentally bumped into him.
"Sorry," the guard muttered.
"It's fine. Just watch where you're going," Jake said.
But then he froze, his eyes going wide as he stared at the security guard, who kept tugging his hat down lower and lower.
The guard had a mask on, so Jake couldn't see his face, but he couldn't shake the feeling. 'Man, this guy looks just like Joel,' he thought.
After a couple of seconds, Jake quickly pulled out his phone and started searching for photos of Joel.
