'No way! No way. Seriously? Is this true? How on earth could Dr. Bennett attend classes here? Could it just be a coincidence? But that security guard really did look a lot like Joel...' Jake worried.
'Or maybe I'm just so rattled by everything that happened today that I'm starting to see things,' Jake thought.
"Hey! Hold up!" Jake called out.
To make sure he hadn't just imagined it, Jake took off running in the direction the security guard had gone.
But after chasing for a while, he didn't see a single soul.
Finally, he went to the security office and asked for the files on all the guards. He checked every single profile, but not one face looked even remotely like Joel.
'So, I really was seeing things?' Jake thought, feeling a bit embarrassed.
When Jake got back to the classroom for his next class, he noticed Kaia wasn't in her seat.
"Alright, let's get started. Today we're going to talk about..." Jake began.
But before he could finish, Henry raised his hand. "Professor Guzman, you haven't called the roll yet."
The whole class looked surprised. Jake was famous for being strict. He always took attendance, so why was he skipping it today?
Jake pressed his lips together, giving Henry a grouchy look that said, 'Seriously?'
'Obviously, I skipped roll call since Kaia's not here. Do I need you to point out the obvious?' Jake grumbled to himself, thoroughly annoyed.
"Professor Guzman, Kaia's over by the library. Look!" Henry shouted, pointing out the window.
Jake was still annoyed with Henry, but curiosity got the better of him. 'Why has Kaia skipped class to go to the library?'
Still puzzled, Jake glanced in the direction Henry was pointing and saw Kaia deep in conversation with a security guard.
'Hold up, a security guard?' Jake blinked, feeling his pulse skip.
'That silhouette... Man, that really does look like the guy I ran into in the hallway!' Jake's thoughts raced.
'Don't tell me this is for real.' Jake's heart hammered with sudden excitement and disbelief.
Kaia had no idea she was being watched from inside the building. She was having a low-key conversation with Joel, who was decked out in a security guard uniform.
"Didn't I say you shouldn't show up when I'm at school?" Kaia grumbled, obviously a little annoyed.
"That was then," Joel replied, sounding like he wasn't planning to listen to her at all.
"And exactly what's so different about now?" Kaia shot back, raising an eyebrow.
"The difference is huge. Back then, you were just one of thousands of students at Morganburg University. But now, as the president, all eyes are on you. If someone meant trouble and I'm not here to watch your back, what then?" Joel pressed, sounding protective.
Kaia raised a hand and rubbed her temples, visibly weary.
"This is Morganburg University. The security system here is world-class. Why would I be in any danger?" she replied, steady and unbothered.
"Like I told you before, you've got your principles, and I have my job to do. Just being Morganburg's president already puts you in the limelight, and with that new announcement from the institute, people are starting to wonder about your real connection with them. That makes you stand out even more, and that means more risk," Joel explained, laying out his reasoning clearly.
"My identity isn't exactly public. Who would ever think I'm the president here?" Kaia said, keeping her tone casual.
"It doesn't matter. I'm sticking around here no matter what," Joel declared, stubborn as ever.
Kaia started to say something, then just gave up and rubbed her forehead, looking defeated.
"Alright, you want to stay, stay. But as for your identity, I'll handle it. Just don't let anyone find out who you really are, or things will get seriously complicated," Kaia warned.
"Don't worry. I've got plenty of experience with this," Joel said, sounding totally unfazed.
"Alright, it's settled. I've got to get to class, but I'll message my assistant later and have her sort things out for you," Kaia said, already turning to leave.
"Got it," Joel replied.
Kaia walked back to the classroom door, nodded to Jake, and walked in.
"Kaia! Just waltzing in like you own the place? Do you even realize you're already more than ten minutes late?" Henry yelled, his voice ringing out across the classroom.
'Or maybe I'm just so rattled by everything that happened today that I'm starting to see things,' Jake thought.
