"Yeah, I know," Kaia said, glancing at Jake. "Sorry, Professor Guzman. I got held up by something important and ended up late for class."
Jake opened his mouth, staring at Kaia's easygoing face, and couldn't quite figure out how he felt inside.
"What important thing? We all saw you chatting with a security guard in the library. Don't tell me you were flirting with him because he's cute." Henry's words just kept getting nastier.
Kaia shot him a cold look, and just as she was about to say something, Jake's furious voice exploded.
He snapped, "Henry! Kaia is your classmate. How can you say something so nasty in front of everyone? I've heard about the trouble between the two of you. It wasn't Kaia's fault, but you keep picking on her. Apologize to her right now, or I'll tell your dad and let him deal with you!"
Henry was stunned. He couldn't figure out why Jake was defending Kaia like that.
'What an idiot!' Lailah cursed inwardly. While others might not know, she was well aware that the new president who took office today was none other than Kaia.
She guessed, 'The school held a meeting for the new president's inauguration early this morning, and with Jake's status, he must have attended. That's probably why he knows who Kaia really is, and why he is ready to defend her so fiercely.'
In reality, Lailah was only half right. The other reason Jake was speaking up for Kaia was that he suspected she had another identity.
"What are you waiting for? Apologize to her now, or you're not welcome in my class!" Jake urged again.
Henry, embarrassed and unable to save face, walked out of the classroom to find his dad.
"Huh? Why aren't you in class at this hour? What brings you here?" Damian asked, looking puzzled.
"Dad, you have to stand up for me!" Henry was so furious that he was practically grinding his teeth, his face turning a dark shade of purple.
Damian asked, "What happened? Who gave you a hard time?"
Henry complained, "It's Professor Guzman. One of my classmates was late for class, and I just mentioned it to him. But instead of blaming her, he made me apologize to her. If I didn't, he said I had to leave the classroom. Can you believe that? Isn't that ridiculous?"
"Really? That's strange," Damian said, getting more and more puzzled. "Professor Guzman is famous for being strict and fair. This doesn't add up."
Henry put his hand upon his chest. "I swear, if I'm lying, may my family and I go to hell."
"You little brat! Are you looking for trouble?" Damian shouted, smacking Henry on the head, his beard bristling and eyes blazing.
Henry pretended to rub his aching head. "I'm not making anything up, Dad. If you don't believe me, go ask him yourself."
Damian shot Henry a glare and, not bothering to hide his annoyance, called Jake.
"Professor Guzman, that's just what my son told me. What's going on here? This really isn't your style," Damian said, sounding puzzled.
Out in the hallway, Jake leaned against the wall with his phone in his ear. "Do you have any idea who your son just picked a fight with?"
Damian blinked, taken aback. 'Why's he asking this?' he thought. "Is she some big shot or something?"
Jake said, "It's Kaia."
Damian hung up in a complete daze, almost forgetting the phone in his hand.
"Dad, so? Did Professor Guzman say he'd give Kaia a real tongue-lashing?" Henry couldn't wait to ask, practically bouncing on his heels.
In the very next instant, Damian sprang up and whacked Henry on the head with all his might.
"Ow! That hurts!" Henry yelped.
Henry howled in pain. Last time, his dad just pretended to hit him, but this time, it really hurt.
