"Dad, what are you doing? You hit me so hard. What happened?" Henry complained.
"Well, you asked for it. All you do is mess around instead of focusing on school. Starting today, I'm getting three tutors to take turns tutoring you every day!" Damian snapped, totally fed up.
Henry stared at his dad like he'd just seen a ghost. "Are you nuts? I'm not taking the SAT. And back when I did, you never hired so many tutors for me!"
"It's decided," Damian said, his tone brooking no argument.
"No, wait. Dad, I..." Henry blurted with panic in his voice.
"Quit whining!" Damian snapped, raising his hand to cut him off.
"But, but what about Kaia..." Henry tried to argue.
Smack! Damian's palm crashed down on his head yet again.
Henry cried out in pain, clutching his head as if the world had ended.
After school, like always, Tobias swung by to pick up Kaia and took her home. Russell, who was used to mooching dinner at their place, was bustling around setting out forks and spoons, trying to look helpful.
Tobias shot Russell a look full of annoyance, but Russell just pretended he didn't see it and kept playing the trusty sidekick for Kaia.
Tobias just gave a helpless shake of his head, then turned to Kaia. "So, I heard you have a new president now. Did you get a chance to meet them?"
Kaia raised an eyebrow. "Why do you want to know?"
"Trust me. You're not gonna want to hear it," Tobias said, looking a little awkward.
Kaia sized up his guilty look and guessed, "Are you trying to butter up the new president with a gift?"
Tobias shot her a fond smile. "Who else would figure me out so fast? You really do know me best, Kaia."
Kaia had seen this routine a million times, and she just rolled her eyes and let the topic drop.
She said, "Honestly, you'd better drop the idea of trying to give gifts," Kaia said. "Things have changed this year at Morganburg University—no more letting the rich kids throw money around to buy their way in. Now it's all about leveling the playing field for ordinary families and those who can't afford much.
"From here on out, they're tightening the rules even more, which also stops desperate parents from bankrupting themselves just to push their kids through the door."
Tobias's eyes sparkled with amusement. "You know what? You sound more like the president than a student right now."
"I'm just telling it like it is," Kaia said with a shrug.
Just then, Russell interjected. "My grandpa's birthday celebration is coming up soon. Would you both like to attend?"
"When is it?" Kaia asked.
"It's right after Thanksgiving Day," Russell replied.
'Thanksgiving Day, huh... This time, I have to drag Tobias out to the countryside and finally come clean to my folks about who he really is,' Kaia mused to herself.
'At least the dates don't overlap, so that works for me,' she thought with relief.
'The only problem is that Russell's grandpa teaches at Morganburg University, too. Better hope he doesn't spill the beans about my secret when we're all there,' Kaia worried.
"Come on, quit staring and start eating. Kaia's the chef tonight, and I'm dying to taste her cooking," Russell said, practically drooling.
"Go ahead, eat," Kaia said, picking up her fork. She was just about to reach for some food when Tobias gently placed some perfectly deboned fish into her plate.
"I went over it carefully. There's not a single bone left. You can enjoy it without a worry," Tobias assured her.
Russell smacked his lips and buried himself in his food, totally absorbed.
In the Bennett family, dinner was underway.
Andrea sat at the table, her face clouded with worry.
"Andrea, what's wrong? Why aren't you eating?" Ruth asked, sounding puzzled.
Andrea's eyes rimmed with tears. "Mom, did you see the announcement from Dr. Bennett's research institute?"
