"What announcement?" Ruth and Lincoln both turned to look at Andrea.
With her voice trembling, Andrea said, "Dr. Bennett's institute just announced that the winner of the Morganburg University research competition will get an internship there."
"What? Really?" Ruth and Lincoln were both stunned by the news.
"Yeah, and that's not all. If the intern does well and passes the assessment, they can become a full-time employee at the institute," Andrea said, tears streaming down her face.
"What do I do now? Dad, Mom, if I hadn't gotten on Kaia's bad side, I'd still be at Morganburg University. With my research talent, I could've won and gotten into Dr. Bennett's institute. It's all Kaia's fault. She ruined my future!" Andrea cried out, her voice breaking with every word.
Andrea was sobbing so hard it sounded like her heart was being torn apart, tears pouring down her face uncontrollably.
Ruth comforted her gently, "Alright, Andrea, stop crying. Seeing you like this breaks my heart. You've got a gift for research. I won't let your talent go to waste."
Then she turned toward Lincoln and said, "Honey, you have to do something."
Lincoln exhaled a puff of smoke, looking troubled.
"What can I do? I warned her not to mess with Kaia, but she wouldn't listen. After what happened last time, I even made a public video announcing that our family would have nothing more to do with Kaia. Everyone knows now that we have cut ties with Kaia for good.
"If I go looking for her now, I'd be slapping myself in the face. And knowing her, she'd definitely humiliate me and turn me away. I'm not going! No chance!" Lincoln muttered, his tone stubborn and frustrated.
Andrea cried even harder. "I was wrong, I know I messed up! Dad, Mom, please, please help me. I swear, I'll never cause trouble for Kaia again! I'm begging you, please. If I ever make it in the research world, I'll repay you both. I promise you'll be proud of me!"
Ruth wiped Andrea's tears, pressed her lips together, and said firmly, "Don't worry, Andrea. I'll make sure this is handled."
"What are you planning to do?" Lincoln asked. "You're not seriously thinking of going to Kaia, are you? It won't work. You know her temper."
Ruth clenched her fists, determination burning in her eyes. "That's right! I'll wait at the front gates of Morganburg University. If Kaia refuses to let Andrea back in, I'll beg her or kick up a fuss in front of the whole school. Let's see if she can still say no!"
Andrea's heart leapt with joy. If her mother really did that, Kaia would have no choice but to give in. Otherwise, everyone would condemn her for being a heartless daughter.
"Don't be ridiculous! She's your daughter. How could you air our dirty laundry and beg her like that? Do you have no shame?" Lincoln protested.
Ruth scoffed, "Andrea is our precious daughter, gifted and full of potential. As her parents, it's our duty to pave the way for her. If you won't do it, I will. I'll go first thing in the morning tomorrow!"
Early the next morning, just as Kaia arrived at school, Ruth stepped right in front of her, blocking her way.
"Mrs. Bennett, what are you doing here?" Kaia asked, her tone cool and distant.
Ruth didn't mind Kaia addressing her that way. In her mind, they were no longer related.
