"We heard about Dr. Bennett's institute working with the university, and that the research competition's champion will get to join the institute. Andrea is exceptionally talented. It would be such a waste for her potential to go unnoticed," remarked Ruth.
With a composed face and steady voice, Kaia asked flatly, "So, you mean you want Andrea to return to Morganburg University?"
Before Ruth could respond, Kaia continued, "That's impossible. When Andrea was expelled the first time, I already said that as long as she stopped coming after me, I wouldn't expel her again. But she never learns. She kept stirring trouble over and over. She brought all of this on herself."
Ruth's breath caught in her throat. Seeing more and more people gathering around, she shouted, "Robbing someone of their future is no different than taking their life. Kaia, there's no need to go this far! I came here to make sure Andrea returns to university. If you don't agree, I'll make a scene here while everyone is watching!"
Under the murmurs and stares of the crowd, Kaia stood motionless, totally unbothered.
Penny's face turned red with anger. "I've never seen a mother like you! This whole mess was Andrea's fault from the start. Instead of setting her straight, you keep backing her up and forcing Kaia into a corner. What did Kaia do wrong? Why are you treating her like this? Seriously, if your mother treated you this way, how would you feel?"
But Ruth wouldn't listen. Her eyes stayed locked on Kaia. "I'm asking you one last time. Will you let Andrea back or not?"
Kaia hated being threatened more than anything, but since it was her own mother, she could only grit her teeth and put up with it. If it had been anyone else, she would've driven them away.
"Oh, so are you just going to stand there and say nothing?" Ruth yelled.
Ruth glanced around. Seeing that enough people had gathered, she was ready to swallow her pride and beg Kaia and make a big scene.
But right then, a masked guard dashed over and yanked Ruth upright, stopping her from getting down on her knees.
"Let me go! Let go of me now, or I'm calling the cops!" Ruth screamed, struggling wildly.
Joel held her firmly and warned, "Causing trouble on campus? You've got some nerve. Leave now, or I'll take you to the police station myself."
Ruth snapped, "Do you really, really think you can take me to the station? Since when does a guard get to call the shots around here? And on what grounds exactly?"
"Harassing a student. Think that's a good enough reason?" Joel retorted coolly.
Ruth gave a cold laugh and glanced at Kaia. "Given my relationship with her, do you think the police would bother?"
"Weren't you the one who publicly cut ties with her? What 'relationship' do you even have with her now?" Joel fired back and shut Ruth right up.
"Enough talk. Just get out of here!" Joel raised his stun baton threateningly.
Seeing that the guard wasn't bluffing, Ruth decided to let it go and come back the next day. She refused to back down or believe she couldn't handle Kaia.
Just as Ruth turned to leave, Penny's eyes lit up, and she called out, "Wait."
Both Kaia and Ruth turned to look at her puzzled, wondering what she was up to.
Penny walked up to Ruth and said, "If you want Kaia to let Andrea come back, you'll have to promise her one condition."
"And what makes you think you can speak for her?" Ruth demanded.
Penny turned to look back at Kaia, who nodded her approval.
"See? Kaia agreed," Penny said, a big grin spreading across her face. She knew Kaia would say yes.
"Then say it," Ruth replied, sounding impatient.
