It was Thanksgiving. Tobias was driving Kaia to her hometown in the countryside. They had been on the road for nearly five hours and were finally getting close.
Kaia noticed how pale he looked and asked, "Are you tired? Let me drive for a bit."
"It's not I'm tired, it's just..." Tobias cut himself off, unsure how to continue.
Kaia asked again, "Just what?"
Tobias's brows knitted together, and he was struggling to say it.
Kaia, being a doctor, took a closer look at Tobias and almost cracked up.
"Oh, you need to answer nature's call, right? Well, there's none around here. Just pick a tree. Country guys do it all the time. Nothing to be shy," Kaia joked.
Tobias gave her a sharp glance. "You say country guys do it all the time. Wait, have you actually watched one do that?"
'If she's ever seen that, I swear I'll track down those guys. How could they tainted her sight and let her see their tools?' Tobias fumed internally.
Kaia immediately knew what was going through his head and twitched her lips in disbelief.
"There aren't public restrooms out here like in the city. Hold it until we get home, or pick a tree. Your choice. And just so you know, we're about to enter the village, but my house is still a good forty minutes away. Do you think you can wait that long?" Kaia teased.
Tobias had planned to tough it out, but after hearing that, he gave up and decided to find a tree.
After they got out of the car, he gave her a serious look and joked, "Keep watch for me, okay? If a woman walks by and sees me, she might be utterly impressed."
Kaia rolled her eyes and urged, "Go go already!"
After shoving Tobias toward the trees, she turned around and saw a Volkswagen approaching.
Kaia didn't even need to look twice to confirm that it was Joel behind the wheel.
'I told him I was going home for a visit, and he didn't need to tag along, but here he is anyway,' Kaia thought and let out a sigh.
She quickly typed out a message to Joel. [Stay hidden. Don't let anyone spot you. If Tobias finds out, it'll be a nightmare.]
Joel replied right away: [Don't worry. I won't.]
Suddenly, Tobias asked, "Who are you texting?"
Kaia was startled and replied, "My folks. I'm letting them know we're almost there."
Tobias didn't give it a second thought and said, "Alright, let's go."
Fifty minutes later, they finally arrived.
Scott had come home a day early and rushed out to help as soon as he saw them pull up.
"Hey Dad, Mom! Kaia and Tobias are back!" Scott called out.
Tobias patted Scott on the shoulder, then gave a small gift to him.
"Thanks, Tobias," Scott said.
Hearing the noise, Solomon and Willa came out to welcome them too.
Once Kaia stepped inside, she realized nearly the entire extended family had shown up, and the room buzzed with chatter and praise.
"Solomon's kids are really something! The son's an exec at K&B, and the daughter's dating the richest man in Morganburg!" one of the aunts exclaimed.
Another aunt chimed in, "Seriously! Just look at how well their kids are doing. And then there's ours... I guess some people just have all the luck!"
"Such a perfect match. They really are made for each other!" another one added.
Tobias took Kaia's hand without hesitation, holding it tightly like it was the most natural thing in the world.
