Either way, she refused to believe someone like that would actually fall for Kaia.
"I agree," Ruth said matter-of-factly. "When she lived here, she was always exaggerating. Sometimes, she'd boast about winning some major awards, and other times she'd go on about how amazingly talented she was."
"But—" Lincoln frowned. "Everything she's said so far has turned out to be true. Top of her class, that miraculous medical case, her connections to the president of Morganburg University—they weren't made up."
That shut both women up, and their expressions darkened.
After a long silence, Ruth spoke again. "Sure, some of it checked out. But what about the classified research and special projects she mentioned? Do you seriously believe that? I absolutely don't.
"And this whole thing about dating Morganburg's richest man? Come on. If it were real, people would've heard about it already. Why would she only brag about it to the people in some backwater village? Because she knows those stupid rural folks would believe anything she says."
"Mom's totally right," Andrea echoed.
She let out a scoff and added, "Why would she lie like that? She could've said her boyfriend was anyone. Why make up something that ridiculous? What if the Moreno family hears about it? Does she even realize how bad that could get for her?
"She's a brilliant top scorer and a rising star in medicine, and now she's out there making up stories? When I get into Dr. Bennett's research institute next year, I swear I'll never be like her. I'll work hard, stay humble, and make my mark the right way."
Ruth smiled proudly, taking her daughter's hand and saying, "That's my girl. You've got ambition, and I'm proud of you. Just remember that Kaia is your cautionary tale. Don't ever ruin your reputation chasing something that isn't real."
"Absolutely, Mom! Trust me. I'll never do something like her," Andrea answered, her tone firm and full of conviction.
"Alright, enough," Lincoln said, rubbing his temples. "You can talk about yourselves all you want, but stop tearing her down. Don't forget. If Kaia hadn't spoken up for Andrea, she wouldn't have even been allowed back into that program, let alone the research competition."
He sighed and looked at them both sternly. "And one more thing. From now on, Kaia has nothing to do with us. Whether she's doing great or failing miserably, she's not family anymore. I don't want to hear her name in this house again."
With that, Lincoln crushed his cigarette in the ashtray and headed upstairs, his expression grim.
"Mom, is Dad—" Andrea started, a trace of concern flickering across her face.
"It's alright, Andrea, really. Don't let it bother you," Ruth said, taking her daughter's hand reassuringly. "Your dad is just tired of hearing about her. And honestly, I get it. So we won't bring her up again—not at home, not in front of him, not in front of anyone. I'll even tell our relatives to stop mentioning her. Like your dad said, she's no longer part of this family."
Andrea nodded eagerly. "Okay, whatever you say, Mom." Inside, she could barely contain her joy after she was certain that Kaia was out of the Bennett family for good.

When evening fell, Kaia wandered around looking for Tobias. She finally spotted him near a patch of watermelon vines—only to realize her younger cousin was standing there with him.
