Kaia didn't walk over right away. From where she stood, something about the way Tobias and her cousin Joyce were standing together didn't look right.
She was too far away to catch what they were saying, so she tiptoed closer, trying to eavesdrop without attracting attention.
Joyce's cheeks were red as she looked at Tobias. "Um... I like you! I want to be your girlfriend!"
Kaia froze for a moment at that shocking declaration.
'People always say you beware of your female friends stealing your man, but apparently, you also have to keep an eye on your own cousins as well,' Kaia thought, a bit dumbfounded.
Joyce was actually pretty lovely. Kaia couldn't help wondering what Tobias would say to that kind of bold confession
So Kaia looked over at him curiously and saw that his expression was as cold and unreadable as ever—like a statue carved from ice. The man radiated self-control.
"If not for Kaia, I wouldn't even bother saying a single word to you," Tobias said coldly.
Joyce bit her lip and said, "Kaia's just a little prettier than me. She's not even that gentle. Besides, she's cold and distant. Do you really want a girlfriend you have to chase around every day?"
"Guess I do," Tobias said simply. His deep eyes softened as he added, "I like how she keeps me on my toes."
Joyce blinked in disbelief. 'This guy's the most powerful man in Morganburg. Nobody would ever guess he's so hopelessly smitten with his girl!' she thought, still in shock.
"Tobias, what are you doing here?" Kaia called out, acting like she'd just showed up.
The moment Tobias saw her, he jumped to explain. "Don't get the wrong idea. I could die a thousand times and still never feel a thing for her. You're the only one I want."
Joyce felt her heart shatter into a million pieces.
Kaia didn't know whether to laugh or sigh. She'd seen enough to understand what was going on, but she didn't want to make a scene. Tobias clearly wasn't interested in Joyce, and this little drama didn't need an audience.
However, Kaia didn't expect Tobias to be so brutally honest.
She forced a calm smile and said, "Come on, my dad is looking for you."
"Okay." Tobias strode toward her and grabbed her hand without hesitation.
Kaia didn't resist. She was used to it by now—he always grabbed her hand like it was his personal habit, and eventually he'd let go when he thought he should.
Just then, her phone buzzed. It was Wilson calling.
Kaia was puzzled as to why Wilson was calling her since he had gone back to SR Alliance headquarters.
And given the time difference, it should've been the middle of the night where he was.
"Hello?" Kaia answered.
"Sweet Kaia, you need to be extra careful these days," Wilson said, his voice unusually serious.
"What happened? Why are you saying that all of a sudden?" Kaia asked, a little thrown off.
Tobias caught the tension in Kaia's face and was intrigued by what Wilson might've told her over the phone.
Wilson replied, "We just got a new task. Someone is offering a massive bounty—for your life."
Kaia stiffened. "A bounty for my life?"
And then she remembered Tobias was still right beside her.
"What's going on? Who the hell would dare go after you?" Tobias's voice dropped, low and dangerous. The air around him seemed to freeze.
"Don't worry about it. I just misspoke," Kaia tossed out, brushing Tobias off.
Then, she stepped aside and lowered her voice, asking, "Wilson, give me more details."
