Wilson said grimly. "Precisely speaking, it's a hit on Dr. Bennett."
Hearing that, Kaia's expression turned grave. This was no small matter and had to be taken seriously.
"Any idea who's behind this?" Kaia asked, her voice tight with tension.
Wilson replied, "Not exactly. We still don't know who wants you dead, but one thing is for sure. They're not from Wustriland."
Kaia thought it through carefully. If the target was Dr. Bennett, that meant her nanomaterial had threatened someone's interests.
It didn't take long before a name came to mind, Augusto Lloyd, a major figure in the scientific community.
Before Kaia came along, Augusto had long held the unshakable position in the field. But now, she had overtaken him and claimed the top spot.
Her development of the new nanomaterial had only cemented her status as the leading giant of modern research.
Kaia had met August once. Though the man was a scientific genius, he was narrow-minded and couldn't stand seeing anyone outshine him.
"Sweet Kaia, you need to take this seriously. I've already reached out to Joel and told him to protect you. Should I send Jack your way too?" Wilson asked, sounding genuinely worried.
Kaia quickly stopped him. "No. If you send Jack here too, won't that just expose me even more? I'm the one they're after, remember? It's like handing them the clue."
"You've got a point. But what's your plan now? Why don't you just come to the SR Alliance? With my resources, I can guarantee your safety," Wilson offered.
Kaia said, "I appreciate the offer, but I'll pass. First, I don't want to leave home. Second, I don't even know who the enemy is or when they'll strike. Hiding away like that would feel like losing my freedom."
Before Wilson could say anything, Kaia quickly added, "Really, I appreciate your concern, but I'll be fine. Besides, Joel's already here, isn't he?"
Kaia couldn't help but groan inwardly at the mention of Joel—this was guaranteed trouble.
Now that he knew about the situation, there was no way he'd sit still or stay away like she had told him to.
Just then, Joel stepped out from the side, pretending to be surprised, "Kaia, you're back?"
Kaia could only rub her forehead, groaning inwardly, 'Just my luck—speak of the devil and he shows up.'
"Well, look who's here. Mr. Moreno himself," Joel said dramatically.
Tobias narrowed his eyes slightly, studying Joel with a calm but probing look.
"What are you doing here?" Tobias asked.
"I've got a relative living around here. It's Thanksgiving, so I came to visit. Kaia knows all about it. Didn't she tell you?" Joel said, tossing the whole explanation over to Kaia.
Kaia shot Joel a glare before quickly explaining to Tobias, "He really does have a relative here."
"Oh, is that so? I'm just curious. Why visit a relative instead of your family for the holiday? What's this relative to you?" Tobias asked, clearly testing him.
"My hometown's too far. You know I'm Dr. Bennett's personal bodyguard. Her safety depends on me, so I can't take leave often. My parents called and asked me to visit this relative in their place since they're unwell," Joel replied smoothly.
Joel's words were flawless, but Kaia just massaged her forehead, feeling a headache coming on. 'Nice save there, Joel. If only it weren't total BS.'
Everything he said was made up. If Tobias bothered to check, he'd find out soon enough that Joel had no relatives there.
"If you don't believe me, you can ask Kaia. You trust whatever she says, right?" Joel said, practically putting Kaia on the spot.
