Kaia shot Joel a look, hinting at him to knock it off.
She sighed quietly and said to Tobias, "If you don't trust me, you can check for yourself. Otherwise, you'll just keep feeling uneasy and start getting jealous over nothing."
Kaia said that deliberately to steer the topic.
"How could I not trust you? I'd never get jealous for no reason," Tobias said, dropping the line of questioning.
Joel edged closer and asked, "Kaia, my relatives' place is a no-go, and there's literally nowhere to stay around here. Can I crash at your place tonight?"
Kaia had seen that one coming, and honestly, turning him down wasn't an option. With how he was, if she refused, he'd probably camp out on her doorstep.
"But there's no extra room," Kaia said.
"That's fine, Kaia. Since you're such good friends, let him stay here. He can take my room," Tobias proposed warmly.
Kaia froze for a second. From what she knew about men, even if Tobias was sure she and Joel weren't romantically involved, he would never willingly let another man get close to her.
"So where are you going to sleep?" Kaia asked.
Tobias answered simply, "I'll sleep in your room."
Kaia finally understood why he was being so kind all of a sudden.
When Kaia brought Joel home, Scott, Solomon, and Willa were all shocked.
"Kaia... Is this Joel Graham?" Willa blurted out, barely able to contain her excitement. She'd only ever seen Joel on TV before.
"Uh, yeah, that's him," Kaia said, her temple throbbing.
"You actually know Joel Graham? Kaia, how come you never mentioned him before? How did you even end up friends with someone that famous? This is amazing!" Willa gushed.
"Uh..." Kaia was at a loss for words.
In terms of status, Tobias was on a whole different level compared to Joel. But Tobias was a business mogul who always kept himself out of the spotlight. To the small-town folks, he was just that mysterious rich guy with pockets deeper than anyone could imagine.
Joel, on the other hand, had a humble background and had risen to fame through his fighting skills. Now he was the personal bodyguard of the world's top scientist. He represented more than money, almost a national hero in their eyes.
Solomon quickly offered Joel a cigarette and called out to Scott, "Scott, go buy some food! And call everyone over! We've got an honored guest tonight!"
Afterward, he turned to Kaia and said, "Kaia, why are you just standing there? Hurry up and pour Mr. Graham a glass of water. He's come all this way. He must be thirsty."
"No need for all the fuss, honestly," Joel said, a little caught off guard by how enthusiastic they all were. He was just here to protect Kaia, not to make her whole family wait on him.
They even asked Kaia to bring him water. Joel thought to himself, 'Seriously? I should be the one serving her, not the other way around.'
"Mr. Becker, I've already had dinner. I just don't have anywhere to stay tonight. Mind if I come in and get some rest?" Joel asked.
"Sure! Go on in and rest. Tomorrow I'll cook up something special," Solomon said enthusiastically.
"I—" Joel was about to say no, feeling a bit overwhelmed.
But Kaia cut in, "Don't turn down my dad's kindness. It's just a meal. If you refuse, I'll take it personally."
Joel had given up a lot to keep Kaia safe, and his biggest sacrifice was missing out on precious moments with his own family.
