Hence, Kaia decided that when things calmed down, she'd visit his family herself.
With Kaia saying that, Joel figured there was no way he could turn them down.
"Then I'll trouble you and your family," Joel said politely to Solomon and his wife.
"No trouble at all! You're Dr. Bennett's right-hand man. Having you here is like having Dr. Bennett herself! This is a massive honor for our family. We'd be throwing a parade if we could," Solomon said, practically beaming.
Joel sneaked a glance at Kaia, but she just stood there cool as ever, acting like she hadn't heard a thing.
Suddenly, Joel realized why Kaia had kept all this from her parents.
The next morning, Kaia was woken up by the noise outside.
When she stepped out, she froze. There were people everywhere. Cars lined the road, and the whole village seemed to have shown up.
Everyone was crowded around Joel, eager to talk to him. Some even dressed up their daughters in their best clothes to catch his attention.
And then there were plenty of people staring at Scott, which made him want to dig a hole and bury himself right then and there.
Meanwhile, Kaia saw that Tobias was standing at a corner all by himself. No one dared come near him.
He just had that aura about him. Even if he was standing there with a blank expression, he gave off a chilling vibe that made everyone feel that stepping into his space was a very bad idea.
So all the girls who had initially wanted to approach Tobias just lost their nerve and stayed put.
When Tobias noticed Kaia coming out, he immediately turned around, his icy expression melting into a brilliant smile that could've outshone the morning sun.
"You're awake?" Tobias's deep voice, smooth and tender, was sweet enough to make anyone's heart skip a beat.
The sudden shift in his demeanor made every girl watching burn with envy.
"What do you want for breakfast? I'll go grab it for you," Tobias said as he walked quickly over to her.
"I'm fine," Kaia replied. "Thanks to Joel, we're having a feast at home for lunch. Better save some room for that."
"Sure thing," Tobias said softly.
At lunch, Kaia's grandfather, Nelson Becker, brought out a bottle of homemade liquor he'd been saving for twenty years
"Mr. Graham, don't hold back! This is my own brew. Drink up and enjoy!" Nelson said, pouring Joel a full glass.
"Yeah, Mr. Graham, this is my dad's treasure. He only opened a bottle for Tobias yesterday, and this one's the very last—so you've got to finish it off!" Solomon added.
Kaia's relatives were all talking Joel into drinking, everyone egging him on. He couldn't refuse without being rude, but he also couldn't afford to let his guard down when he was supposed to be protecting Kaia.
Seeing his hesitation, Kaia leaned close and whispered so only he could hear, "You know, I actually feel bad for you. Ever since you started working for me, you've had to constantly hold yourself back. Like that time you almost skipped the international boxing competition just to stay and protect me."
She shot him a look, adding, "Honestly, if you'd really missed that competition because of me, I would've fired you myself. We all have our paths. I don't want you dropping everything for me. That's not how this works.
"And I know you're worried about getting drunk in case something happens to me, but let me tell you this—I may not train every day like you, but if it came down to a fight, I could still give you a run for your money. So don't underestimate me."
