"I never thought of looking down on you," Joel said.
"I know, so don't worry about me. Anyway, this is the countryside and Tobias's guys are watching the village entrance. If anyone unfamiliar shows up, they'll notice right away. Just chill, nothing's going to happen," Kaia replied.
With that, Kaia filled Joel's glass to the brim, raised her own, and tapped it against his. "Cheers!"
"Alright!" Joel shoved all his worries aside, picked up his glass and knocked it back in one shot.
"Joel, you've really got a strong head for drinks! Let's have one together!" Solomon beamed with delight. With Joel, the esteemed guest, honoring them like this, Solomon eagerly raised his glass and finished it in one gulp.
Right after, Kaia's whole family joined in, each of them grabbing their drinks and celebrating with Joel.
Watching Joel slam back drink after drink—he was on like his fifteenth by now—Kaia sent some silent sympathy his way.
'Seriously, who knows when this guy will get back to normal?' Kaia snarked inwardly.
Just as Kaia was thinking this, Tobias suddenly leaned in close, his breath brushing against her ear.
"What were you whispering to Joel just now? Something I'm not supposed to hear?" he teased.
Then he added with a smirk, "Hey, don't get the wrong idea, I'm not jealous or anything."
Kaia wasn't in the mood to mess with Tobias anymore, so she just grabbed her glass and bumped it against his.
"Wanna drink?" she asked.
Tobias gave her a teasing look. "Or we could make it a cross-cupped toast like the newlyweds do?"
Kaia rolled her eyes, just about to take her own sip when Tobias slyly looped his arm through hers and swept her straight into a playful cross-cupped wedding toast.
"Come on, drink up!" Tobias chuckled, eyes twinkling at Kaia, who was caught off guard.
Kaia snapped back to herself and tried to pull away, but Tobias just held on tighter, not about to let her go.
"Let go! People are watching!" Kaia whispered urgently, darting glances around as her cheeks flushed pink.
Luckily, everyone was too busy drinking with Joel to notice what was happening between them.
"Come on, drink up. If you don't, I'm keeping you locked in this position. The longer we stay like this, the more embarrassing it's gonna get, trust me," Tobias teased with that devilish grin of his.
Kaia was so mad she could've dumped her drink on his head, but, seeing everyone distracted, she just sucked it up, went with this ridiculous pose, and took the cross-cupped shot.
"Now that's what I call a proper toast," Tobias said, looking absolutely thrilled.
Kaia couldn't even be bothered to look at his smug face.
After more than an hour of food, drinks, and laughter, the night finally ended with Joel passing out slumped over the table.
"Where are you going?" Tobias asked, seeing Kaia grabbing her tools and heading out the door, following her with a confused look.
"Russell's grandpa's birthday party is coming up, right? I heard he's been losing his hair like crazy, so I figured I'd go dig up some Fo-ti root for him," Kaia replied.
"There's Fo-ti growing up here?" Tobias asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Yeah, I spotted a really old one once; shaped like a little person, easily a hundred years old. I even marked where it was," Kaia replied.
"Then let's go together." Tobias grinned.
Kaia knew there was no way to ditch Tobias, so she just let him come along.
As they were walking, Kaia suddenly heard Tobias let out a low grunt from behind.
"What's wrong?" Kaia asked, glancing back.
Tobias was gripping his thigh, looking really uncomfortable, and Kaia grew worried. "What happened? Take your hand away, let me check."
Tobias suddenly felt dizzy and lowered himself down. "I didn't notice, but a snake just slithered right past me," he muttered weakly.
"You got bitten by a snake! And not just any snake, it's poisonous." Kaia's brow furrowed tightly.
Seeing Kaia so worried, Tobias suddenly seemed to forget about the pain. "Hey, how about you do the classic suck out the venom for me?"
"Wow, you've really watched too many soap operas," Kaia snarked, rolling her eyes.
