"Huh?" Joel blinked in surprise, then his gaze shifted to Tobias. Seeing the herbs on his leg, Joel finally relaxed.
"When I heard your mother shouting about someone getting hurt, I freaked out for a second, I thought it was you," Joel said.
Tobias narrowed his eyes, giving Joel a look that was hard to read. "Joel, you seem a little too worried about my fiancée. Someone might think there's something going on between you two."
Joel suddenly realized he had just been a bit too jumpy.
"Didn't I mention before? Kaia literally saved my life once. So, of course I care about her," he reasoned.
Willa and Solomon walked up right then, catching Joel's explanation.
"Oh, that makes sense. No wonder you got so worked up over Kaia," Willa said.
"Exactly. Really, don't get the wrong idea. Kaia and I are just close friends, that's all," Joel said, purposely deflecting any suspicion about him and Kaia.
It didn't seem likely anyone would make that connection. To them, Kaia was just an ordinary person, no one would ever think to link her with the top boss in the scientific world. Still, just in case, Joel couldn't help but stay cautious.
The Thanksgiving Day ended in a flash, and the very next day, Kaia and Tobias headed back to Morganburg together.
They had promised Russell earlier; they'd go to his grandfather's birthday celebration as soon as the holiday was over.
"Hey, Tobias, where are you guys?" Russell called, his voice urging them to hurry up.
Since Tobias was driving and couldn't answer, Kaia picked up the phone on his behalf. "We're almost there. Five minutes tops."
"Alright, I'll be waiting!" Russell replied.
As soon as Russell hung up, a snarky voice echoed beside him. "Russell, what's gotten into you lately? Why are you suddenly treating Kaia so nicely? Weren't you always telling us how Tobias' grandpa set him up with this girl who just couldn't stop showing off?
"She bragged about buying that Maybach herself and kept claiming she knew people at Dr. Bennett's institute. It felt like every day she had some wild new story. From the way you talked, you totally couldn't stand her."
It was none other than Russell's younger sister, Yvonne Fisher.
"Times change. Back then, I barely knew Kaia, so I just jumped to conclusions. Honestly though, maybe Kaia really did buy that Maybach after all," Russell admitted.
If Yvonne hadn't mentioned it, he wouldn't have even remembered.
"Ha! Give me a break," Yvonne snorted. "You and Tobias must be under Kaia's spell or something. Seriously, why toss aside someone as awesome as Bianca, your childhood bestie, for some girl straight out of nowhere?"
Bianca was right next to her, and when she heard that, she played it up; her eyes turned red like she was about to burst into tears. "Yvonne, that's enough. I guess Toby and I are just star-crossed or something."
"Star-crossed? Please! If it weren't for that homewrecker Kaia butting in, you two would've been together ages ago!" Yvonne said, totally taking Bianca's side.
Cecelia nodded in agreement. "I totally agree with Yvonne. Bianca, you and Tobias are meant to be. It's all Kaia's fault for getting in the way of your relationship."
Russell couldn't take it anymore. "Come on, that's way over the line. How is Kaia a homewrecker? Tobias and Bianca were never even together. And honestly, it's Tobias who's chasing after Kaia. She hasn't even said yes yet."
Honestly, just bringing this up made Bianca even more pissed off at Kaia.
