She was bitter; Kaia had what Bianca could only dream of, yet she acted so casual about it, pretending not to care, and teasing Tobias by playing hot and cold.
"She hasn't said yes yet? Come on, she's clearly leading Tobias on! I can't stand girls like that. No way am I just gonna sit here and watch him get played, and Bianca is not getting hurt either. I'm telling Grandpa. He'll straighten this out," Yvonne said.
Just as she finished complaining, Howard strolled over, absentmindedly stroking his beard. "What kind of help do you want from me?"
"Grandpa!" Yvonne clung to Howard's arm. "It's Kaia, she's using all kinds of schemes to hook Tobias. You're Morganburg University's top professor, nobody's sharper than you. Please, help us figure out how to make that woman stay away from Tobias."
"Kaia? Why does that name sound so familiar?" Howard frowned.
"Of course it is! Kaia Bennett. You know, the so-called useless heiress the Bennetts kicked out? Everyone's been talking about her. They say she bullied her little sister and mouthed off to her parents, so they kicked her out," Yvonne said in a gossipy tone.
"Huh, really? I had no idea about any of that," Howard replied.
"Well, Grandpa, you spend all your time buried in your research. It's no wonder you never hear about this kind of drama!" Yvonne teased.
"Still, why does that name ring a bell? Feels like I just heard it somewhere the other day..." Howard mused, talking more to himself than anyone else.
Yvonne kept pestering Howard, "Grandpa, you have to help Bianca out! And Tobias too, you've watched them grow up. I know you can't stand seeing Bianca heartbroken, and you definitely don't want Tobias getting led astray by that barn girl."
Cecelia jumped in, backing her up. "That's right, Mr. Fisher, you really have to help my cousin Tobias! You're the smartest of us all, and Tobias actually listens to you, he really respects whatever you say."
"Alright, I'll meet this Kaia and see for myself if she's really as bad as you all say. If she is, I'll make sure to talk some sense into Tobias," Howard said.
"Grandpa!" Russell blurted out, trying to interrupt before things got out of hand. "Don't listen to them! Kaia is not at all like what they're saying. She—"
"Ugh, Russell, what is with you lately? Why are you always on Kaia's side?" Yvonne huffed, folding her arms in frustration.
"I'm not taking sides, I'm just speaking the truth," Russell replied helplessly.
"Whatever, I'm not wasting my breath on you. Grandpa's got a sharp eye. When he meets her, he'll see straight away just how rotten she is!" Yvonne said.
She was dead certain Kaia was nothing but trouble, and just as sure her brother was totally bewitched to keep backing her up.
"Whatever, I'm done talking to you." Russell rolled his eyes.
Seeing that arguing with Russell was pointless, Yvonne turned her attention to Howard. "Grandpa, I heard Morganburg University just got a new president. Can't you put in a good word for me and bend the rules a little to get me in? Pretty please?"
"Uh..." Howard looked uncomfortable. "I don't think that's possible. They've got strict policies now, no sneaking anyone in through favors."
"Come on, Grandpa! I'm begging you, I just really want to study at Morganburg University. All my friends are already there except me. I feel totally left out, it's so humiliating!" Yvonne clung to Howard's arm, still pestering him endlessly.
Just then, Tobias and Kaia walked in.
"Tobias, Kaia! Finally! Glad you made it." Russell hurried over, then leaned closer to Kaia and muttered, "Hey, my sister's totally got the wrong idea about you. Don't take it to heart, she's just being a brat."
