"Yeah, don't worry. What irrelevant people say doesn't matter to me at all, I just ignore it," Kaia replied.
Tobias spoke up right after Kaia, his voice steady. "Kaia is generous, but she's mine. I don't mind letting things slide, as long as they don't cross the line."
Russell blinked, caught off guard.
Then, Yvonne popped out from behind him, pointed at Kaia, and exclaimed, "Grandpa, look, that's her! That's Kaia!"
Russell felt the urge to yank Yvonne out of sight on the spot, while Howard glanced at Kaia, his eyes almost bulged out in surprise.
"Oh—" Howard stuttered, words stuck in his throat.
"Professor Fisher, hello. I'm Kaia Bennett, a student from the Computer Science Department at Morganburg University. I'm here with Tobias to wish you a happy birthday," Kaia said calmly.
"You're—" Howard stammered, then burst out laughing. "Good, good! Thank you, thank you! It's an honor to have you at my birthday party. I'm really happy!"
Everyone at the table was completely baffled, feeling there was an odd vibe but unable to put their finger on exactly what was strange about it.
"Grandpa!" Yvonne tugged on Howard's sleeve, whining, "Why are you being so friendly to her? You said you were going to tell her off!"
Howard shot Yvonne a glare and snapped, "Come on, Yvonne, that's really out of line. Kaia went out of her way just to wish me a happy birthday. You should be grateful, not asking me to lecture her! Is this really how your parents raised you to behave?"
Yvonne could tell Howard was genuinely upset, and her temper flared up instantly. "Grandpa, what is going on with you? Instead of yelling at her, you're giving me all the heat! You're this mad at me over that useless girl?"
"Who are you calling useless? She—" Howard snapped, barely keeping his anger in check.
Kaia was the president of Morganburg University and close with Dr. Bennett's research institute. Howard couldn't believe his granddaughter would say something so outrageous, he was so close to tearing into her right then and there.
"And another thing!" Yvonne spat, still fuming. "She's the one who stole Tobias, a side chick! How could you possibly defend her?"
Suddenly, with a sharp smack, Howard slapped Yvonne right across the face.
The whole hall fell into a sudden hush, every eye snapping toward the commotion.
Russell stood there dumbstruck, while Bianca and Cecelia looked just as shell-shocked.
Howard unleashed his thunderous rage. "Yvonne, where's your manner? You keep accusing her of being the other woman! How on earth is Kaia a homewrecker? Her engagement to Tobias was set by their grandfathers, and they've already celebrated with an engagement party.
"As for Bianca, sure, she and Tobias have known each other since they were kids, but that's all there ever was between them. You claim Kaia is the third party here? If you ask me, Bianca looks more like the side chick!"
Everyone at the party was left even more gobsmacked than before.
Especially Bianca, after her initial shock, she could feel all the strange, judgmental stares turning her way.
She was so mortified right now that if there was a mousehole in sight, she would've crawled in without hesitation.
Russell was just as stunned. He hadn't seen his grandpa pull a complete 180 like this, not in a million years.
He knew for sure, every bit of this was because of Kaia.
With that realization, Russell couldn't help but steal a glance at Kaia, and sure enough, Tobias's eyes were fixed on her at the exact same moment.
But under their burning, curious stares, Kaia looked totally unbothered and composed, just standing there like nothing could rattle her.
Russell nudged Tobias with his elbow and muttered, "Tell me I'm not the only one who thinks my grandpa's seriously off today."
"Yeah," Tobias said, deadpan.
Russell leaned in a bit closer. "It's got to be because of Kaia, right?"
"Yeah," Tobias replied again.
